Fashion today is no longer just about trends or glamour, it is about stories, inclusivity, and purpose. Shagun Gupta, the founder and creative force behind LA Fashion Closet, embodies this evolution. The LAFC showcased a fashion show with budding design students and couture collections from established design houses. This event was hosted in Bikaner House, New Delhi on January 3, 2026. In an exclusive interview, she opened up about how the LA Fashion Closet began, how it evolved into a global fashion production platform, and her vision of breaking boundaries through fashion.

Shagun Gupta On LA Fashion Closet Journey

LA Fashion Closet did not start as a large-scale fashion production. In fact, its roots were deeply personal, Shagun shared, “LA Fashion Closet started a few years ago, around five or six years back. It was not really an event business at that time. It started from my own closet.”

Originally, the platform focused on selling Indian clothing in Los Angeles. Shagun herself was a designer, and the idea naturally took shape around her personal collection. “That’s why it’s called the LA Fashion Closet. I used to sell Indian clothing, and I was a designer myself. That’s how it all began,” she explained. Over time, what began as a small entrepreneurial effort gradually expanded into something far more impactful.

Entering World of Events And Empowerment

As the brand grew, Shagun found herself drawn towards community-driven initiatives. “Later on, it grew into an event business. I did a lot of women empowerment events and many Indian community events in Los Angeles and across America,” she said.

Her increasing involvement in the fashion industry opened new doors. She worked behind the scenes, gaining hands-on experience in fashion production. “I started working backstage, I was an interviewer myself and did a lot of interviews,” Shagun recalled.

These experiences allowed her to connect with designers, creatives, and industry professionals from across the globe. “ I met a lot of people, connected with a lot of people and networked a lot and then eventually I started thinking of starting my own production,” she added. This marked the true beginning of LA Fashion Closet as a fashion production house.

LA Fashion Closet Celebrates Diversity

One of the defining aspects of LA Fashion Closet is its commitment to inclusivity. When asked how designers are selected for the fashion shows, Shagun emphasised diversity as a core value.

“We are a very diverse production. We choose all kinds of different designers. We promote and we accept people who do different designs, like regular ones but we also do sustainable designers who promote sustainability. We also work with a lot of designers who do a lot of diverse profiles. “We also work with designers who create plus-size clothing and represent diverse profiles. We want our platform to be very welcoming,” she added.

Central Theme: Fashion Beyond Borders

Every LA Fashion Closet show revolves around one central idea, Fashion Beyond Borders. For Shagun, this concept is not limited to geography.

“We are actually beyond borders in the sense that not just geographical borders, but mental borders. You know, we want people to be very accepting of, be it the body shape, be it the skin colour, any disability. So basically there are no borders in fashion. That is what we are trying to promote”, she explained.
