Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, is when the thyroid gland produces too few hormones. The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in the center of your neck, is the master gland of metabolism. Thyroid hormones play a vital role in regulating metabolism and energy use and affect almost all of the body's organs. In the early stages, a person may not notice any symptoms. However, without treatment, hypothyroidism can lead to severe complications, such as infertility and heart disease.
Every year May 25 is observed as World Thyroid Day to make people aware of this disease. On World Thyroid Day we will tell you about 10 such common signs and symptoms that will help you know that your thyroid is not working properly and it is a time to visit a doctor for a quick consultation.
It is to be noted that there are two types of thyroid that affect you the most. Hypothyroid and hyperthyroid both are types of thyroid but there is a distinction between the two. Symptoms of both are different. And one has to change one's lifestyle according to it.
Hypothyroidism And Hyperthyroidism
In Hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine while in hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid is when the thyroid slows the production of hormones needed for metabolism and energy. Hyperthyroidism may lead to grave diseases like Thyrotoxicosis while Hypothyroidism does not give rise to these diseases. Hyperthyroidism increases the metabolism while hypothyroidism, or low levels of thyroid hormone, slows your metabolism and decreases growth or repair of many parts of the body.
Suddenly Feeling Cold Or Sweating
The thyroid gland is like a thermostat of our body, it controls the temperature of our body If the hormone production increases then it increases your body's metabolism due to which you feel hot and starts to sweat. If there is a dearth of thyroid hormone in your body then the person starts feeling cold.
Hair Fall/ Thinning Of Hair
Hir growth depends largely on the functioning of the thyroid gland. Change in hormones level produced by the thyroid gland can result in change your hair growth pattern. If hormones are produced in large numbers then your hair starts thinning from the scalp while a slow production of hormone can result in hair fall.
Irregular Periods
If you are having problems with your period then unnecessary hormones are active in your body. Due to a shortage of sufficient hormones, you may face heavy menstrual bleeding for a long time and with rapid frequency. However, if the hormone production is more, then it may reduce your period.
