Starting a family is one of the biggest milestones in an individual’s life. While getting married to the right person is a big deal, having children with them has a more significant value. However, some individuals may face difficulty in procreating due to underlying or genetic issues in their bodies. In such cases, it is essential to visit a health professional to get yourself examined for potential risks and find a solution.
If you are wondering when to see a fertility specialist, we have you covered. We spoke to Dr Rubina Pandit, Fertility Specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, Basaveshwaranagar, Bengaluru. Keep reading to know the essential information she shared with us.
When To See Fertility Specialist
Age
Age has a direct impact on fertility. Women under 35 can consult a fertility specialist if trying for over a year. However, it is ideal to consult a specialist after six months of trying if you are 35 and above. “Age-related reductions in fertility are normal, but early treatment might increase your chances of getting pregnant,” says Dr Pandit.
Irregular Menstrual Cycle
“Ovulation is indicated by regular menstrual periods. If your periods are irregular, too long, too short, or absent, it could indicate an underlying issue with ovulation, which may require medical attention,” advises Dr Pandit.
Reproductive Health Issues
If you or your spouse have a history of reproductive health problems, like endometriosis, low sperm count, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), you must consult a specialist immediately, as these can affect your potential for pregnancy.

Repeated Miscarriages
Dr Pandit says, “Having several miscarriages can be draining and may point to a problem with fertility. A fertility specialist can assist a healthy pregnancy by helping to determine the reason and providing treatment options.”
Previous Cancer Treatment
Radiation and chemotherapy, the two types of cancer therapies, might affect fertility. You must speak with a fertility specialist if you have undergone these treatments.
Pre-Conception Counselling
Consulting a fertility doctor before starting your reproductive journey can be beneficial. Dr Pandit suggests, “This can help you maximise your chances of a healthy pregnancy, understand your reproductive health, and address any possible difficulties. It is especially advised for those with pre-existing medical issues, genetic issues, or lifestyle factors that might impact fertility.”
