in vitro fertilisation

In this fast-paced modern world, men and women are more vulnerable to a range of health issues due to their hectic schedules, anxiety, stress, unhealthy lifestyles, etc. These factors lead to difficulty in conceiving. After years of trying hard to conceive, it can be very frustrating. However, the advancement in technology made things easier. In light of the same, we spoke to Dr Priti Gupta, Senior Consultant in Fertility, IVF services, First Step IVF (Centre for Reproductive Medicine) in New Delhi.

According to Dr Priti Gupta, “Metropolitan couples are more likely than those in rural places to experience fertility issues. The likelihood of naturally becoming pregnant has dropped due to the prevalence of low sperm counts in men and decreased egg reserves in women in recent years. Fertility methods such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) can be beneficial for these couples”.

What Is IVF?

IVF stands for In-vitro fertilisation and is also known as test tube baby. It uses assisted reproductive technology (ART) that involves fertilising the egg and sperm outside of the female (should a pregnant women skip dinner) body. The process comprises monitoring the woman's ovulatory cycle, extracting an egg or ovum from the ovaries, and letting the sperm and egg fertilise in a laboratory. The fertilised egg is inserted into the woman’s uterus. The most effective form of assisted reproduction technology is IVF. Using this procedure, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is also possible.
