Recurrent miscarriages

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) or miscarriages is an emotionally draining time for any woman. It is defined as the loss of two or more pregnancies, as confirmed by a relevant medical test or ultrasound. Accurate detection is possible in roughly 60% of the cases while the remedy plan depends on the cause. Experts state no reason is found in most cases but whatever the situation may be, lending support and careful monitoring of the woman's health will go a long way in ensuring her health. We spoke withDr. Anuradha Kapur, Principal Director (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) & Head of Unit, Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, and she shared more.

Causes, Treatment, What To Do in Recurrent Miscarriages

Dr. Kapur attests to the aforementioned sentence that cause is usually not found in over 50% of the cases. However, even if no cause is detected, in about 65% of the cases, a couple can conceive.

As per the doctor, the usual causes of RPL can be:

  • Chromosomal defect in the fetus
  • Genetics
  • Immunological causes like an anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome
  • Congenital anomaly in the uterus, like septate uterusor fibroids
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid
  • Any other medical disorder

To find out what is causing recurrent pregnancy losses, "a health care professional will ask about your medical history and past pregnancies, and may perform a complete physical exam and blood tests," said Dr. Kapur.

As for treatment, there's one "for all the causes that we can detect. For example, if it is anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome (an autoimmune disorder that results in the production of abnormal antibodies, increasing blood clot risk), we can give them molecular weight heparin (inhibits clotting factors) and aspirin (helps those with milder symptoms such as frequent headaches and dizziness)."

In a situation where doctors find some chromosomal defect behind RPL, "we can sometimes send them for genetic counselling or if they are repeated chromosomal defects, we send the tissue for analysis and every time there's a repeated chromosomal defect, there is an option of genetic diagnosis and IVF," suggests Dr. Kapur.

Even when they cannot ascertain the causes, doctors counsel the patients and ensure they can have a healthy pregnancy. For them, the remedy plan includes:

  • Having folic acid every day
  • Quit smoking and alcohol
  • Attend programs crafted to guide them
  • Have lots of fruits, vegetables, and antioxidants
  • Stick to a low-calorie diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Have your supplements

"Check with your doctor when she/he wants you to start planning again and follow their advice and you will have a nice healthy pregnancy," Dr. Kapur wraps up.
