The National Capital Region has seen the darkest of delusions possible in the past ten days or more. We probably gifted one of the darkest Children’s Day’s to our little ones this Nov 14th. However, a little tinge of blue now is leaving us with a hope to breathe better eventually. We are to blame ourselves for the deteriorating air quality, only if we could bring our literacy to some use. Nonetheless, there is still some hope and if we want, we can do something to make it a little better for our children in the coming times, saysEminent Classical Singer, Composer and a Raga Therapy proponent, Runki Goswami.

The current level of pollution leaves us with a question – Is there a way to save our lungs and get ourselves off the effects of perilous pollutants in the air? What about the asthma and other lung patients who probably have faced the worst nightmares of all? Is it always medication or inhalers for them is there an alternate way for them to heal naturally and feel better?

While India is known for its various alternate therapies, one of the most impactful and clinically proven alternatives is Raga Chikitsa or Raga Therapy. Our own origin and home-grown Raga have the miracle drug to sail us through practically anything and everything.

Given the erosion of overall music into the raucous kinds that we hear today, the original format of divinity in music is gradually losing its prominence. Nonetheless, we should be thankful to the handful who are still working towards its revival in a big way. Raga Therapy is also gradually taking centre stage amongst all forms of music and other sound therapies existing around us. The unadulterated ragas in Indian classical are blend of symphonic compatibility between the seven notes and seven primary chakras in our body. This is one of the reasons of the impact Indian classical in our mind, body and soul. No wonder, it has the power to pull out some of our hidden faculties.

Coming back to the point of this polluted air and helping ourselves with a natural shield, I’d like to recommend some raga-based tips which when heard or sung can do miracles to your overall system. Having said that, one does not have to be a classical singer or classical music connoisseur to follow these tips. You could use it as a simple alternate therapy and also enjoy the melody to your hearts content.

Here’s a little mix of Raga’s to alleviate the smoggy sickness and I sincerely hope this mix gives you the immunity to breathe easy.

Start you day with a 20 mins audio of any Bhajan, Shloka or even a Film Song in Raga Bhairavi. What about listening to Hume tumse Pyar kitna from the film Kudrat or may be Bhor Bhaye Panghat Pe from the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram? They are Raga Bhairavi afterall! For the spiritually inclined, Bhairavi is best heard in Devi shlokas like a Kali, Durga or even a Lakshmi shloka based on this Raga.

If you prefer an instrument over vocal, your go-to organ would be the ones that thrive on wind/air like a Flute. Wind instruments make your lungs strong. The impact of a wind instrument on any lung borne problem is huge. Any format of Raga Bhairavi works best early morning between 6-7:00 am with a maximum stretch until 8:00. Make sure to absorb this Raga intensively. You could team it up with your morning Yoga or even while sipping a hot cuppa.

After sunrise comes moon rise which is equally critical to ensure a successful raga therapy. You have ample of Raga‘s to choose from for your bedtime regime. Surf through your favorite compositions in either Raga Malhar, Darbari or Kedar. They help clean all blockage, congestion and impurities your lungs would have soaked through the day.

Imagine the rains sweeping off the dust, dirt and pollutants from your doorstep. Point to note is to select either of the three and not play all the three in one go. Doing that could need to insomnia. You can opt to choose either of the three every day.

Cherry on the icing would be add a Raga Durga to boost your overall immunity. Though this Raga is also a night time Raga, but can be heard or sung anytime. Look for your favorite composition in this Raga and plug in whenever feeling wheezy or stuffy – it is sure to help! One such old Bollywood composition I can think is the title track of Geet Gaya Patharon Ne.

Leaving you with a don’t: Heavy metal beats are not known to help your lungs. Do not go beyond a sprinkle!
