Menstruators bleed every month. Though it is a natural process, there are certain abnormalities that one must not miss out on. Your body might be indicating an underlying disease that can be caught at the early stage if you keep a track of your menstrual cycle.
As long as your periods are consistent, you do not have to worry about anything. Here is a list of menstrual abnormalities that women must not ignore.
Heavy Bleeding
Bleeding differs from person to person. Some bleed heavily while others experience low flow. However, if you have to change a pad or tampon in just an hour, you might have menorrhagia, says a Healthline report. This is called abnormally heavy bleeding.
If you experience it at any time, you must consult a doctor. The reason behind this could be polycystic ovarian syndrome, fibroids, adenomyosis, bleeding disorder, endometriosis, an issue with an intrauterine device (if you have opted in as a birth control option) or any pregnancy complication.
Unbearable Cramps
Cramps, abdominal pain and backache are normal during periods. However, it is abnormal if the pain is unbearable for you. The cramps are a result of uterine contractions pushing out the uterine lining.
It may start a few days before periods and can last for two to four days. In case you experience severe cramps, the condition requires medical attention. It is called dysmenorrhea. The reasons that can lead to painful periods include adenomyosis, fibroids, stress, sexually transmitted diseases, an IUD and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
Skipped Periods
If you are skipping periods, it is a sign to sit with your gynaecologist and get to the source of the problem. Many times, stress, birth control options and intense exercise can result in skipped periods. If this happens once, it is normal.
However, if it happens to you frequently, it could be a disorder. The problem is called amenorrhea. According to Medical News Today, the reason behind it could be extreme weight gain and loss, eating disorder and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Clotting
With many women, clotting could be a regular feature, especially on days when they experience heavy flow. However, the issue lies in the size of the clot. If it is small, there is nothing to worry about, but if the clots are big and they appear frequently, there can be an underlying health issue that might need immediate attention from the doctor.
The reasons behind the issue could be endometriosis, fibroids and adenomyosis. Pregnant women must also be careful if they experience a clot and consult a gynaecologist immediately.
Prolong Bleeding
Most women bleed for three to seven days. If the bleeding continues, it is an abnormality that you must not ignore. If the duration of bleeding changes every month, for example, bleeding occurs for a shorter or longer duration, you must speak with a doctor about it.
