Every year on February 4, World Cancer Day is celebrated, to spread awareness about this disease. The goal is to reduce the misconceptions about cancer and reach out to more people with the right information about it. Giving a live example of a woman like you and me, HerZindagi was fortunate to have a word with a Breast Cancer Survivor, who fought her battle and beat the disease but it was of course not an easy path. Nischal Goswami, the managing director of Aausco India stressed on the fact that you should not lose heart or cut yourself from the society just because you are suffering from Cancer!

When You Discovered That You Have Cancer, What Went Through Your Mind?

When I came to know that I had breast cancer, I thought what will I do now... because we all think that cancer means death. This is because people do not know much about this disease. I would say that people should be aware of cancer because I think that cancer may or may not kill you but the fear of cancer can for sure!

Are There Any Symptoms?

The worst thing about this disease is that the symptoms of cancer are not known. I used to work 11 to 12 hours, in which I used to take responsibility for both the office and the house. And at the same time, the cancer was also developing in my body. But I did not know when it went so far ahead. Nowadays women are very serious about their careers. But due to dual responsibility of home and abroad, stress has increased in his life, which promotes cancer. It is very important to have the right lifestyle for this. Being sensitive about your career is a good thing, but it is also important to take care of yourself.

Even today, girls are told in India that before you take care of yourself, take care of others. While I would like to say the opposite, self-care is not being selfish... First of all, women should check their breast themselves and women as many as 35 years of age should definitely do mammography. One very important thing is that not all bumps in the breast are cancerous. But if you look a bit different then go to the doctor as soon as possible. Whether you have life insurance or not, medical insurance is definitely worth it.

How Did The Family Support?

In my family, I would like to name my daughter first who was only 14 years old at that time. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was just missing her face. But that 14-year-old daughter kept me and the whole family positive and did not let anyone lose hope. And from that, I learned that maturity and age have got nothing to do with it because she had become my mother at that time. My son who was in class 12 at the time, I was always worried about him as he was very naughty, but he took to his studies seriously which made me feel lighter. Seeing these changes in the children, I got courage because my children were stronger instead of breaking down. My husband supported me a lot which instilled courage in me.

At that time I realised the importance of a familyv family for mental illness and physical support. Also, my friends inspired a lot.

What Was It Like During Chemotherapy?

During chemotherapy, I felt a little weakness, the taste of the tongue went away and a lot of hair blown away. But during that time you become even more beautiful. Those who love you are not connected to you, but to the heart, and I have never found such deeper love. For them, I had to hide a few things though. I used to go down without a wig so that people would know what cancer is? And get it checked on time.

Your Message To Women

Nowadays, there is a solution to everything. The days have gone when cancer was not treated. Now people should have awareness. Make yourself an inspiration. If you keep smiling, then only half the pain is gone! If you lose your hair during chemo, then you remain natural. You are beautiful only when you are happy from inside. Do not cut yourself off from the society, go with society together. After 6 months you will not even know that you have come out of this treatment yourself because by then you have battled cancer and survived.
