The connection between blood type and immunity has been a subject of increasing interest in both modern science and traditional practices like Ayurveda. While science investigates how blood types might influence immune responses and disease susceptibility, Ayurveda offers insights into how an individual’s constitution—referred to as ‘Prakriti’—affects their health. Both perspectives seem to converge in suggesting that our immunity is deeply influenced by factors such as blood type, lifestyle, and balance within our bodies.
In this article, we explore how blood groups might impact immunity based on expert input from Dr Vaibhavi Velangi, a consultant rheumatologist, at Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune and Dr Snigdha Vartak, BAMS, an Ayurvedic doctor at Samanwaya Ayurveda Clinic in Hyderabad.
Blood Groups and Immunity
According to Dr Snigdha Vartak, modern studies on blood groups align with this ancient knowledge. These studies suggest that immune responses can vary depending on a person’s blood type.
For example, Dr Vartak explains that individuals with a dominant Vata dosha—often linked to A+ blood type in certain studies—may experience greater sensitivity in their immune responses. Ayurveda emphasises balancing Vata to maintain harmony within the body, a concept that aligns with modern findings suggesting that blood type influences immune function and disease susceptibility.
Blood Type and Infections
Studies show that individuals with blood group O exhibit a natural resistance to severe malaria. In Ayurveda, Kapha dosha is associated with stability and resistance to diseases, a trait that mirrors the characteristics of blood type O. Dr Vartak elaborates, “The O+ blood group is thought to reflect Kapha's stable and robust nature, which helps the body resist infections like malaria more effectively.”
Conversely, individuals with blood type A, who may be more vulnerable to infections like H1N1, should focus on strengthening their immunity. Ayurveda suggests bolstering Agni (digestive fire) to enhance overall immunity, allowing the body to better defend itself against infections and diseases.
Autoimmune Conditions and Blood Type
There is emerging evidence suggesting that certain autoimmune diseases are more common among specific blood types. Dr Vaibhavi Velangi acknowledges that while studies have explored the relationship between autoimmune diseases and blood type, the results remain inconclusive. “A study from Turkey found that autoimmune rheumatic diseases were less common in people with blood type AB, while Rh+ blood types showed a higher prevalence of rheumatic diseases. However, further studies are necessary to fully understand this connection,” explains Dr Velangi.

Heart Disease and Cognition
Studies have shown that individuals with non-O blood types may have a higher risk of developing heart disease. Ayurveda connects heart health to the Pitta dosha, which governs metabolism, heat, and stress. Dr Velangi explains, “Blood types such as A, B, and AB, which are linked to higher heart disease risks, are associated with an imbalance of Pitta. Managing stress, balancing Pitta, and adopting practices like Pranayama and regular exercise can help mitigate these risks.”
Cognition and Memory
Ayurveda attributes cognitive functions such as memory and mental clarity to the Sattva quality, which is nurtured by Kapha. People with blood type O, often linked to Kapha characteristics, tend to be less prone to memory loss and cognitive decline. Dr. Vartak notes, “The inherent stability and strength of Kapha dosha support mental clarity, which may explain why blood type O individuals often experience better memory retention.”
Ayurveda recommends practices such as meditation, dietary adjustments, and dosha-balancing strategies to enhance cognitive function. It also offers holistic tools to restore balance and support cognitive health for individuals with blood types that may be more susceptible to memory issues.
While modern science provides valuable insights into how blood type affects immunity and disease susceptibility, Ayurveda offers a more holistic approach by considering the interplay of genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. As Dr Velangi highlights, “Although the link between blood type and autoimmune diseases is still inconclusive, ongoing research may offer groundbreaking discoveries in the future.”
In the meantime, Dr Vartak suggests that integrating Ayurveda’s personalised strategies—such as tailored diets, lifestyle adjustments, and herbal remedies—can help individuals optimise their health and immunity, taking into account their unique blood type and constitution.
