Recently, thenews of Dipika Kakar's Stage 2 liver cancer diagnosis shocked everyone and brought our attention toa stark reminder that liver health can be a ticking time bomb. Our expert, DrSatish Pawar, Sr. Consultant & Head – Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery at CARE Hospitals in Hyderabad, shared how even little care and attention can help you protect your liver.
Liver Cancers And Causes
Dr Pawar said, "'The indomitable great soul is the one who is invincible when it is invincible...' The words about Dharmaraja in the Mahabharata apply to the liver in our body. As a gland associated with the digestive system, the liver performs nearly five hundred functions. Usually, if cells in any part of the body are damaged, those organs do not have the ability to regenerate them. After the skin, only the liver has that ability. Even if about 20 percent of the liver is damaged, the remaining part can perform all its functions. How does such a liver get cancer? Many people think of liver cancer as a disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption and alcoholics. But only one out of a hundred types of liver cancer is caused by uncontrolled alcohol consumption."
"Mainly due to hepatitis B and C viruses, biliary atresia, and metabolic diseases lead to liver cancer. Of these, hepatitis viruses cause a large number of liver cancers. Even if infected with hepatitis, some people may not even notice the damage caused by it for many years. Liver cancer appears after about 20-30 years. Liver cancer has been found to occur in adults due to eating foods contaminated with aflatoxin B1, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), obesity, insulin resistance, and hereditary fatty liver disease," he added.
It is normal to have some fat in the body. But fatty liver disease occurs when it exceeds 10% of the body weight. This problem is more common in middle-aged and obese people. Hemochromatosis (increased iron in the body) and chronic hepatitis diseases can also cause liver cancer. Diabetes and intravenous drug use have also been found to cause liver cancer. Acute hepatic necrosis occurs when liver cells die due to harmful chemicals, certain types of medicines, and drugs. Biliary atresia occurs when bile ducts are affected from birth. Hepatitis B and C. Hepatitis is usually caused by viruses. Sometimes, changes in a person's physiological functions have an adverse effect on the chemical processes of liver cells. This leads to metabolic diseases. Infectious diseases - The immune system, which is intended to protect the body from bacteria and viruses, attacks the person's liver cells, causing autoimmune hepatitis.
When the liver has been damaged for a long time due to habits and conditions that caused the damage, the condition deteriorates completely. The liver's special regenerative power also ceases to function. The liver, which is responsible for constantly protecting the body from dangerous chemicals and substances, naturally works in close proximity to dangerous situations. In this process, there are chances of being exposed to various diseases. Liver cirrhosis, acute hepatic necrosis, biliary atresia, viral hepatitis, Wilson's disease - hematometabolic diseases, autoimmune hepatitis, and liver cancer can cause the liver to no longer function. A person cannot live without a liver. If it cannot function, there is no alternative but to transplant another liver in its place to save lives. With the availability of advanced medical equipment and treatment methods, this surgery, which was previously rare, has now become almost risk-free with a success rate of 90-95%.
