For many women in India, menopause is still a topic that remains shrouded in stigma and misinformation. Women often struggle with unnecessary anxieties during this natural stage of life. From weight gain myths to intimacy concerns, there are myths are widely believed.

We spoke to Dr. Irfana Shahul Hameed, obstetrician and gynaecologist with Plush, who breaks down the most common myths about menopause.

3 Menopause Myths You Need to Stop Believing

While the body undergoes several significant changes during menopause, it is best to be aware of facts, without believing in rumours.

Myth 1: Weight gain after menopause cannot be reduced

“The biggest myth about menopause is that weight gain after menopause cannot be reduced,” says Dr. Hameed. “During this stage, visceral fat and fat around the abdomen and thighs tend to increase, making it difficult for women to lose weight. This happens due to the shift in estrogen levels, which can lead to fatigue, extreme cravings, and additional weight gain.”3 (34)

But, she reaffirmed, that this isn’t a dead end, which shouldn't concern women too much.

“With the right guidance, including proper nutrition and targeted exercise, weight loss, especially around the abdomen and thighs, can be effectively managed,” she added.

Myth 2: Hormone treatment is unsafe or causes cancer

A lot of women hold on to many theories around hormone treatment being unsafe.

Dr. Hameed disagreed. “The second biggest myth about menopause is that hormone treatment is unsafe or causes cancer. When monitored and administered correctly, hormone therapy is safe. It is typically recommended for women experiencing a range of menopausal symptoms, including fatigue, mood swings, depression, anxiety, and issues related to bone and cardiovascular health,” she explained.

She emphasised that women should not fear seeking medical help when needed. “Hormone therapy has benefited many women, and the risk of breast cancer is negligible with regular monitoring and proper medical supervision,” she added.

Myth 3: Menopause leads to a loss of intimacy and sexual wellness

Another commonly held belief is around sexual lives changing. This is perhaps the one most shrouded in silence.1 (65)

“Another common myth is that menopause necessarily leads to a lack of sexual wellness or intimacy,” said Dr. Hameed. “Intimate wellness can take a backseat during menopause, but there are many treatment options available to address these issues.”

She pointed out that challenges like stress urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, and genital-urinary symptoms of menopause (GSM) are real but manageable.

“These symptoms are primarily due to hormonal changes and can be addressed with newer, safer technologies. Seeking guidance from the right healthcare provider can go a long way in managing these symptoms effectively,” she said.

Menopause can be a complex time for many way, but misinformation shouldn’t be another added hindrance. With open conversation and a willingness to seek help if needed, women can navigate this phase with confidence.
