Your love for that mug of warm coffee is well-known in your circle because that's your only preferred way to start the day. Now, a few days back, you learned about your pregnancy and suddenly your favourite hot beverage smells extremely repulsive. You are just not able to gulp it down. Sounds relatable? Don't worry, you are not the only one. Disgust towards coffee during pregnancy is a pretty prevalent phenomenon. Dr. Nidhi Sharma Chauhan, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Saifee Hospital, says why it happens.
Why Do You Have Aversion Towards Coffee During Pregnancy?
Let's admit, coffee is highly addictive for most of us. Its aroma captures your senses the moment you inhale but at times, that same beverage repels you. It might be due to a stomach bug, allergic reactions, or sensitivity to a few ingredients of the coffee. But, did you know pregnancy is also a major reason why your love for coffee can take a U-turn?
As per Dr. Sharma Chauhan, when a woman is expecting, she develops cravings for a few dishes, while "some even develop a total aversion towards a lot of food items that they seemed to enjoy previously." This happens because of the changes in your hormonal levels when pregnant, causing alterations to your taste, smell, and digestion, she adds.
Aversion towards coffee once expecting also happens "probably because the caffeine in your coffee gets cleared off slower from the body," Dr. Sharma Chauhan points out. This slow metabolism makes a "pregnant lady feel more nauseous, jittery, and light-headed. These symptoms are in addition to the already existing nausea of pregnancy," she adds.

Many women can tolerate coffee during pregnancy though. "They must, however, remember not to have too much coffee, especially during the first trimester. Total caffeine consumption during pregnancy should be as low as possible as caffeine can have adverse effects on the pregnancy such as a miscarriage, pre-term birth, and low birth weight," Dr. Sharma Chauhan cautions.
