Not on your period, but noticing a brownish stain in your underwear? You might be wondering, is it blood, discharge, or something else entirely? Brown vaginal bleeding, especially outside of your usual cycle, can be confusing and even alarming. But don’t panic just yet as most of the time, it’s harmless. Still, understanding what’s normal and what’s not can help you take better care of your reproductive health. So we got in touch with Dr Mannan Gupta, Chairman & HOD, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Elantis Healthcare, New Delhi
According to Dr Gupta, brown bleeding often happens when older blood takes longer to leave the uterus. As it gets exposed to oxygen, it changes colour from red to brown. This is quite common, especially at the start or end of a period.
Here are a few reasons why you might notice brown spotting:
Brown discharge before or after your period is usually just old blood being cleared from your system, totally normal.
Some women experience light spotting when they ovulate, often due to hormonal changes. This can appear brown and is usually nothing to worry about.
If you are in early pregnancy, brown spotting can happen when a fertilised egg implants in the uterus. This can be an early pregnancy sign.

Spotting or brown discharge can be a side effect of hormonal contraceptives like pills, patches, or IUDs, especially when you’ve just started using them.

While occasional brown discharge is often harmless, Dr. Gupta advises keeping an eye on certain red flags. You should see a doctor if the bleeding is:
Yes, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea can inflame the cervix, leading to brownish discharge or bleeding after intimacy. Getting tested and treated promptly is essential.

Brown vaginal bleeding is usually just a part of your body’s natural cycle. But if something feels off or symptoms persist, it’s always better to get it checked out.
“If you’re ever unsure, consult your gynaecologist. It’s far better to get clarity early than risk ignoring a serious health issue,” says Dr Mannan Gupta.
