While we are moving towards an age of advanced technology and modern conveniences, some of the traditional health practises are making a comeback. One such practises is drinking water from a copper vessel. This age-old habit, rooted in Ayurvedic medicine, is said to offer a multitude of health benefits. Dr Piyush Mishra, General Physician and Immunisation Officer, North East District, New Delhi shared a few benefits of drinking water from copper vessels.
Here are some of the benefits of drinking water from copper vessels:
Dr Piyush Mishra highlighted that copper has been known for its potent antimicrobial properties for centuries. According to the National Library of Medicine, copper can effectively kill bacteria and viruses and thus storing water in copper vessels for several hours or overnight can turn it into a magical drink. This process, known as the oligodynamic effect, can destroy harmful bacteria like E. coli and S. aureus, which are common causes of waterborne diseases. Thus, drinking water from a copper vessel can help cleanse your gut and aid in digestion.
According to Dr Mishra Ayurveda suggests that drinking water from a copper vessel can help balance the three doshas in the body (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), promoting overall health and wellness. He highlighted that copper has properties that stimulate peristalsis (the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the stomach to help digestion) and reduces inflammation in the stomach lining, making it beneficial for those suffering from digestive issues like acidity, gas, and indigestion.
Dr Mishra mentioned that copper plays a significant role in breaking down fat and eliminating it efficiently from the body. “By aiding in the proper functioning of the digestive system and improving metabolic processes, copper can help you maintain a healthy weight,” added Dr Mishra.
Dr Piyush highlighted that copper has been found to help regulate blood pressure, and heart rate, and lower bad cholesterol levels, while also increasing good cholesterol. Its anti-inflammatory properties can also reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. He further added that regular consumption of copper-infused water can therefore contribute to a healthier heart and a lower risk of heart disease.
According to Dr Mishra, Copper is known for its anti-aging properties. It is a potent antioxidant that helps fight off free radicals, which are one of the main causes of the appearance of fine lines. It also aids in the production of new and healthy skin cells. He said that drinking water from a copper vessel can reduce the appearance of fine lines and maintain the elasticity of your skin, giving it a more youthful and glowing look.
