So you’ve missed your periods and tested positive for pregnancy. Everything is fine until the day you see that you are bleeding again! It can look like a scary sign and if seen in the later terms of pregnancy, signal a miscarriage. But you cannot bleed as much as your periods during pregnancy as the shedding of the uterine wall does not take place when you have conceived. So what’s with all those spots of blood? Well, there is not much to worry about as this type of spotting is somewhat common during pregnancy. Such break through bleeding can occur in 1st month of pregnancy and may continue if your hormone levels are low. Also, implantation bleeding, which occurs 10 days after ovulation, is usually pinkish or dark brown in colour.

If you test positive on that pregnancy kit and still start to bleed on your next period date then there’s a possibility that it was a false result so relax! But if your pregnancy has been confirmed by your doctor and you still bleed a little before your periods then it means that ovulation has not taken place and you are bleeding because the uterine lining has not been shed.

While full blown periods are impossible during pregnancy, light bleeding or spotting is common in 1st trimester for 1-2 days once and then in the 5th to 8th weeks. Dip in progesterone, cervical changes, infection, subchronic hematoma, molar pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage can cause such bleeding in the 1st trimester. If bleeding occurs during the 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancythen the causes can be a uterine rupture, placenta abruption, placenta previa, incompetent cervix, premature labour or in extreme case, miscarriage. So it is best to have your gynaecologist examine if the bleeding becomes a bit heavy and if you are having severe stomach cramps.
