Your sleeping position matters a lot. In case you are too tired, you stretch and sleep on your back and sometimes you turn on your left or the right side. But did you know that sleeping on your left side has many health benefits? From making your digestion better to improving heart health, your left side can make a lot of difference. According to Ayurveda, here is a list of benefits that a left-side sleeping posture has.

Heart Health

We all know that our heart is on the left side so by sleeping on that side, there is a better, smoother flow of blood towards the heart when we go by the force of gravity.

Digestion

It is not just the heart but also the pancreas and the stomach is located on the left side of our body. Hence, when we sleep on the same side, they tend to function better. Due to gravity, the food passes through easily and when required, the pancreatic enzymes are also released. Not just this, the elimination of food waste becomes easier. The toxins and undigested food moves from the small intestine to the large intestine easily and then they reach the colon.

As per Ayurveda, if we take a 10-minute power nap after meals and sleep on the left side, it boosts energy and makes the process of digestion much better. This also keeps heartburn at bay.

Pregnancy

It is said that pregnant women should sleep on their left side as that takes away a lot of pressure from their backs. It also helps in increasing the blood flow between the uterus and the fetus. Sleeping on the left side also helps in relieving the immense pressure on the spine and the expecting mother gets better sleep as it makes her more comfortable. For the growing baby as well, the smooth flow of nutrients to the placenta is way better for its health. All that the expecting mother has to do is to bend her knees slightly and keep a pillow between her legs while sleeping on the recommended side.

Snoring

We snore a lot when we sleep on our back and have often been told to sleep on one side. But it is the left side which stops the snores that disturb everyone else around. When we have our tongue and throat in a neutral position it helps in keeping our airways clear enough to be able to breathe properly. The habit ofSleeping on the backactually makes things worse as the position pushes these muscles to the back of your throat which further makes the breathing process a bit difficult.

If you have not been sleeping on this particular side then it may be a little difficult for you to change this habit. So take your time and correct your posture whenever you wake up in the middle as it will be good for you in the long run.

Another important point is that your mattress needs to be sturdy and good for your body posture. Invest in a good quality mattress so that your shoulders and hips do not take much pressure. A good mattress is also good for your spine so that it rests properly and stays aligned as well. A wrong choice can give you body aches and bring discomfort to your sleep.

Consider speaking to your doctor if you feel you may be uncomfortable. It is best not to be our own doctors and take professional help when we are not sure about something.
