Back pain, uneasiness, nausea and period cramps; your body goes through a lot during periods. ‘That time of the month’ could be extremely tormenting if you suffer from extra painful abdominal cramps. You can resort to painkillers or hot water bags for comfort, but yoga asanas will help you in dealing with them in a more natural way. Light exercise can help in releasing endorphins, which acts like a natural painkiller for the body. Here are some yoga poses you must try the next time you get your cramps.

Knee To Chest Pose

Also known as the happy baby pose, this exercise is the easiest one to do while in pain. Lie on your back and bring both your knees to your chest. Now press your knees against your chest and raise your lower leg to face the ceiling. Now hold both your feet with your hands and roll to one side. Take a deep breath and roll to another side. Slowly rock from one side to another just like a baby does. It will exert pressure on your abdomen and will help in easing the pain.

Child Pose

Begin the pose by sitting in a kneeling position. Rest your buttocks on your heels and keep your back straight. Now inhale and stretch your body in the forward direction. Throw your upper body on the ground with your arms stretched forward. Rest your forehead on the ground and hold the position for a few seconds. This pose will instantly have an affect on your abdomen and will tone down the pain.

Spine Twists

For this pose lay on your bed with your body in a straight line. Now as you inhale bring your left leg towards your chest by folding it. As you exhale, twist your legs towards the other side and bring it towards the right side of your abdomen. Hold the position for a few seconds and repeat the same with the other leg. This exercise will relax your body by stretching both your back and abdomen together.

Doing the camel pose might be a bit tough while you are on your periods but it can help in easing your painful period cramps. To do the pose, sit in a kneeling position with your legs bent backwards. Now hold your heels with your hands and rise upwards. You should be able to form an arch with your back while maintaining a grip on your heels. Look towards the ceiling and hold the position for a few seconds. Camel pose will help in stretching your uterus muscles, which will further help in easing menstrual contractions.

Pillow Prop

If you want instant relaxation from your throbbing period cramps, then a pillow can come handy. Just keep a pillow under your back and lay on top of it. This will lift you back up and stretch your stomach as well. Lying in this pose will provide the much needed comfort from the cramps. You can also keep a hot water bag on your lower abdomen while doing this pose for added relief.

Doing heavy exercises during periods is generally not advised. These light exercises will not only keep your agile but will also relieve you of gut-wrenching cramps.
