Dr. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra – Director, The Yoga Institute, says that yoga is one size that fits all. No matter how old you are, everyone can practice Yoga. As a matter of fact, as you age, Yoga is one of those things that you should definitely keep on practicing. It not only refreshes your mind but also your spirit. It keeps the body well-toned and maintains a hormonal balance in the system. There is only one thing that you must keep in mind while practicing Yoga with age, and that is to focus on quality and how you do it, over how much you do it. As you reach the age of 40, you can still practice all the asanas, unless you have some medical conditions. Here are 3 asanas that you must definitely include in your routine:
Viparit Karni
As you are nearing your menopause, you must practice this semi-inversion as it helps to improve the blood circulation to the reproductive system and improve your health. For this, lie down on the floor, legs together and hands by the side of the body. Slowly lift the legs and lower back off the floor and take them up and support your lower back with your hands. Let the toes be in line with the eyes and breathe normally for 5-6 breaths. Slowly release the asana.

Parvatasana
This asana should be done regularly as it stretches the sides of the body completely, thereby making you feel a lot lighter and relaxed. Sit in padmasana and bring your palms together in namaskar, breathing in, take the arms above the head and stretch the body vertically. Since the lungs are expanded, take 4-5 deep breaths and gently release the pose.
Supta Vakrasana
As the name suggests, this asana gives a gentle twist to the spinal column. Regular practice of this relaxes and exercises the spinal muscles. It also impacts the back and abdominal muscles, trims the waistline and removes the stiffness from the lower back. Sit on the mat with the legs stretched in front of you, keeping the back and neck in line, and head parallel to the floor. Stretch both the hands forward at shoulder level and twist to the side. After 3 normal breaths return to the center and repeat on the other side, and relax.
You also need to keep in mind some other tips to have a healthy life post 40:
- No matter what, spend a lot of time on your body. Don’t neglect physical health.
- Have a systematic asana routine wherein you practice 30 minutes in the morning and evening.
- Include a lot of walking in your daily routine as well.
- Sharpen your memory by memorising something daily, be it a shloka or even a joke.
- Now would be the perfect time to acquire some knowledge. Enrich your life by learning something that you can use in your practical life and advance.
- Avoid bouts of anger here and there, and keep developing and improving your life by keeping yourself occupied in everything that you love!
