 Air India pilot and crew get a makeover as Manish Malhotra designs new uniform which includes saree pantsuits for the cabin brew that comes after 60 years.

Air India cabin crew and pilots get new uniforms after a six decade period since it was founded in 1932. Ace Indian designer Manish Malhotra, designed the staff’s new wardrobe and has given it a fresh spin. This has come at a time when the airline has brought Vistara under its fold via a merger.

The airline took to the social media platform X to mention that the new uniform which will be rolled out by the end of this year with a post saying, "ode to Air India's rich history and a promise of a bright future."

The airline has roped in fashion designer Manish Malhotra to design their new uniforms for over 10,000 of its flight crew members, ground staff, and security personnel in hues of red, aubergine, and gold, "representing the confident, vibrant new India," they further said.

Taking to his social media handle on Instagram, Manish Malhotra posted a video featuring imagery and samples of the new outfit with the caption, ““I am honored to have been given the opportunity to design the uniforms for Air India. It is a privilege to be able to contribute to the national flag-bearer and showcase the elegance and charm of Indian fashion. My aim was to create uniforms that capture the essence of India’s diverse culture and traditions while also embodying a modern and sophisticated look. By incorporating quintessential hues that are symbolic to India, I hope that these uniforms not only make the crew feel proud but also leave a lasting impression on the guests, representing the warmth and hospitality that India is known for.”

Air India also dropped a video on their Instagram page announcing the new uniforms with a caption saying, “We are proud to present to the world, the all-new Air India Pilot & Cabin Crew uniforms, designed by @manishmalhotraworld

As per Air India's press release, Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, was quoted saying, “Air India's crew uniforms are amongst the world’s most storied in aviation history, and we firmly believe that Manish Malhotra's innovative ensemble will script an exciting new chapter for Air India's future narrative. It perfectly captures the essence of our new identity, service principles, and our pursuit of setting new benchmarks in global aviation.”

Manish Malhotra Shares Behind The Scenes Details Of The New Uniforms

Manish Malhotra who has designed these uniforms in his Mumbai studio further shared, “There have been times when halfway across the world I have caught a glimpse of an Air India and felt closer to India again. In the earlier years, they (cabin crew) actually used to wear lehengas and ‘maang-teekas’. For me, designing these uniforms for the new era was an incredibly exciting chance. I wanted to stay true to Air India’s roots while weaving in my own vision to represent the new chapter we are stepping in.”
