Healthy Desserts – Sounds like a joke doesn’t it? But when it comes to indulging in desserts while watching your calorie count, that’s what you have to opt. From barfis, cakes, jalebis and brownies to ice creams, laddoos and tarts, there are so many things that you can choose from to give in to your sugar cravings. Then the guilt starts to creep up on you and the sugar high slumps, leaving you oh so miserable. Now in the world of Indian desserts, there are two dishes that are equally loved by dessert eaters i.e. the Rasgulla and the Gulab Jamun. But only one of them is healthier for you. So which one is it?

The Making Of Sinful Delights

Most desserts like shrikhand, lemon tarts, and cakes and so on are made up of sugar, white flour and trans fats which is a tricky combination of all unhealthy things mixed to create something that can be pretty irresistible. To find out whether Gulab Jamuns are healthy or Rasgullas, we have to look at how they are prepared at first. Both are sweetened by dunking in sugar syrup called chaashni, which is made with large quantities of sugar. While Gulab Jamuns are dunked in a thicker and sticky chaashni, Rasgullas are dipped in thinner syrup which is sometimes squeezed out before having them.

Mawa, made of full cream milk, is used to make Gulab Jamuns. To this, maida is added to make a thick dough which is then rolled into balls. These are deep fried in ghee and go straight into the chaashni. Rasgullas, on the other hand, are made from Indian cottage cheese which is rolled into balls and steamed in a cooker or steamer.

Calorie And Fat Content

A piece of Rasgulla has 125 calories and 5 grams of fat while a piece of delightful Gulab Jamun has 150 calories and 7.5 grams of fat. Gulab Jamuns are basically balls of ghee while the protein and calcium content of the cheesy Rasgullas is way higher.

Verdict

Comparing the level of sugar in the chaashni, the basic ingredients and the mode of cooking the Gulab Jamuns and Rasgullas plus their calorie and fat count, it is quite clear that Rasgullas win hands down.

So if you are watching your calorie intake and want to indulge in something sweet then do opt for the soft and spongy Rasgullas to make your day while staying healthy. Eating healthy is a conscious choice that we have to make every day and maintaining your health while indulging in your favourite desserts is a smart choice any day.
