According to Dt. Nivya Vikal, pregnant women can consume protein powder, but only after consulting their doctor. “Pregnancy is a crucial phase where women must be cautious about the type of food they consume,” she explains. Not all protein powders are safe for pregnant women, as some may contain harmful additives, heavy metals, or artificial colours that could negatively impact the baby's development. Therefore, careful selection and medical guidance are essential before incorporating protein powder into a pregnancy diet.

What To Avoid And What To Choose When It Comes To Protein Powder For Pregnant Women?

Not all protein powders are suitable for pregnant women. “Certain protein powders contain high levels of BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids), which can adversely affect the baby's growth and development,” says Dt. Nivya Vikal. She further explains that protein powders high in fats and carbohydrates can lead to unnecessary weight gain during pregnancy. “Extra weight and calories can increase the risk of gestational diabetes,” she adds. Additionally, protein powders containing heavy metals pose a risk of toxicity.

To ensure safety, pregnant women should look for protein powders that are specifically designed for pregnancy. These powders are free from harmful additives, artificial colours, and heavy metals. Nivya Vikal stresses that whole foods should be the primary source of nutrients during pregnancy. “Natural sources of protein provide additional vitamins, minerals, and fibre that are essential for the mother's and baby's health,” she explains. Since protein powders may not offer the same level of comprehensive nutrition as whole foods, it’s best to rely on a balanced diet. Moreover, the presence of hidden additives in some protein powders can be a cause for concern.

Instead of relying on protein powders, pregnant women can consider natural protein sources that are safe and highly nutritious. “There are several natural options that provide the same amount of protein as protein powder,” says Dt. Nivya Vikal. These include:

  • Greek Yoghurt: is rich in protein, calcium, and probiotics that support gut health and aid in digestion.
  • Nuts And Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds offer protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients for pregnancy.
  • Lentils And Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, and black beans are excellent sources of protein, fibre, and essential minerals.
  • Vegetables: Certain vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and peas are packed with protein and other vital nutrients needed during pregnancy.

Natural protein supplements provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients, making them a safer choice during pregnancy. “It’s important to consume these natural sources in moderation and ensure dietary variety to promote the health of both mother and baby,” advises Dt. Nivya Vikal.
