Misty valleys, lush green forest cover and incessant rains have earned Cherrapunji the title of not just being the second wettest place in India but its visual splendor makes it one of the most preferred holiday destinations too. Located at a height of 1484 ft in the southern extension of Khasi hills, the town offers a mesmerizing view of the Bangladesh plains. Home to some of the mightiest falls in India, the almost extinct Red Panda and the famous double-decker living roots bridges, Cherrapunji is a heaven for anyone and everyone who revels in nature’s majesty.

Just in case you plan to head to this breathtaking town, here are the most beautiful waterfalls that you should surely check out.

Kynrem Falls

What makes this waterfall one of a kind is it's divided into three levels. Needless to say, the best time to visit these falls is around monsoon. The best view is offered from below, where you can see all the levels full of cascading water. These falls are one of the highest in Meghalaya.

Naohkalika Falls

Falling from a height of 1100 ft, these falls are 4th highest in the world. Located 5 km out of the city, the drive to the falls is characterized by undulated terrain, of course punctuated by the scenic beauty. The best time to visit Naohkalika falls is around monsoon, when they are gurgling with water. The falls have a disturbing legend associated to it. Noh Ki Likai, translates into ‘the leap of Likai’. Ka Likai, a young tribal woman had a daughter from an earlier marriage. Ka Likai’s second husband loathed her daughter’s presence and one day killed her and prepared a meal using her flesh. Ka Lika, mistakenly consumed the meat and later, on discovering that the meat was nothing but her daughter’s flesh, plunged from the top of the mountain and since then the falls are known as Noh Ka Likai falls.

Dainthlen Falls

Another famous waterfall that Cherrapunji boasts of is Dainthlen. Located 5 km out of the city, Dainthlen is flocked by tourists year round. Besides the huge volume of water, what draws tourists to the location are the natural rock carvings which depict the episode of a ‘thlen’ ( Khasi term for python) being killed adjacent to the rock overlooking the falls. This is how the falls get their name too.
