Every spring, travellers rush to Japan for cherry blossoms or walk through Holland's tulip fields. But few people ever talk about the Himalayas' other incredible spring show, the blooming rhododendrons.
These brightly coloured mountain flowers grow only in a relatively small part of the world, with one of the highest concentrations in the Sino-Indian Himalayas. This area covers Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and parts of Nepal. The whole mountainside bursts with colour once winter ends. Around mid-March, the last patches of snow start to melt, and small, tightly closed buds open into deep reds, bright pinks, and even softer purples and whites. These flowers cover entire hillsides throughout the spring months, making them look almost fiery.
If you plan a spring trek, these six trails guarantee you'll see a spectacular sight.
Ranthan Kharak is one of the western Himalayas' most rewarding rhododendron routes. The trek to Parva Thor and Chopu past Namik village takes you through thick oak and rhododendron forests, where fiery red flowers line the trails for about two days. This trail is quiet and offers solitude as you walk under canopies heavy with colour, unlike the more crowded routes.

Khopra Ridge offers both stunning Himalayan views and dazzling rhododendron forests. As you move through parts of the ridge closer to Ghorepani and beyond, the surrounding forests glow with vibrant colour. Behind the mountains, the massive heights of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Massif rise. The route is challenging in parts, but the colourful display makes the steep climbs absolutely worthwhile.

This classic spring route truly comes alive when you reach Chopta. Rhododendron trees burst with pink and red as you begin your climb toward the Chandrashila summit. The Deoriatal is a beautiful stop, tranquil and reflecting snow-capped peaks. The views from the top of Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba are unforgettable. Deoriatal is an easy-to-access trail with a manageable summit climb, making it a perfect spring trek for any hiker.
Sandakphu-Phalut is an iconic eastern Indian trek, featuring stunning ridge walks and unmatched views of Kanchenjunga and even Everest on a clear day. Beyond Gurdum and Aal, you’ll enter rhododendron forests that bloom in bright pink, scarlet, and white. The contrast of snow-covered giants with vibrant flowers beneath creates a scene unlike any other in the world.
Right after you begin your ascent at Lohajung, you’ll find that Brahmatal is covered in a blanket of budding rhododendrons. The trees tower above you with bright pink flowers scattered throughout the canopy. Brahmatal is a good beginner's trek, offering beautiful views and plenty of colour with a fairly gentle incline and two pristine alpine lakes.

Goechala is one of the most sought-after rhododendron trails in the eastern Himalayas. Through the areas around Bakhim, vibrant flowers often line the paths. Wooden log bridges and misty forests complement the bright reds and pinks. These features, along with stunning views of Kanchenjunga, can turn this trek into a dreamy experience.
March and April represent a brief time when the Himalayas momentarily ease their icy grip and burst with colour. Timing a trek correctly during this season lets you see mountainsides ablaze with rhododendrons, a natural phenomenon just as dazzling as any in the world, but much more solitary and wilder.
