Bougainvillea Spring Care Tips: Bougainvillea is a beautiful flowering plant that many gardeners love for its vibrant colours and strong growth. As temperatures changes in Spring, it’s important to look after your Bougainvillea with a few simple care steps so it stays healthy and ready to bloom in Spring season. Spring care doesn’t have to be complicated with a little attention to a few essential things, you can help your Bougainvillea plant thrive even when the weather is cooler.
One of the most important steps in the Spring season is watering less. Bougainvillea grows more slowly in cooler months, so it doesn’t need frequent watering. Water only when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Because too much water in spring can cause root rot and weaken the plant.

Bougainvillea prefers warmth, and chilly weather can stress the plant. If the nights are cold, think about protecting your plant. You can use an insulating cloth or a frost cover to wrap it gently, especially when frost is expected. If grown in pots/ containers, move Bougainvillea to a sheltered bright spot (like a sunny window) or a cool place.
Even in spring, Bougainvillea needs good light to stay healthy. If your plant is indoors or in a shady spot, try to place it where it gets as much bright light as possible. If natural light is limited, you can use supplementary light from a grow lamp to help keep the plant in better condition until spring.

During spring, Bougainvillea doesn’t actively grow, so it’s best to hold off on fertilising. Feeding the plant at this time can encourage new growth that is too tender for cool weather. Wait until signs of active growth return in late spring or early spring season before resuming fertiliser.

Spring can be a good time to do light pruning so just remove dead, weak or damaged stems of your Bougainvillea plant. This helps keep the plant tidy and encourages good air flow around the branches. Avoid heavy pruning in deep Spring, as this can stress the plant.
