Actress Urvashi Rautela has stirred controversy after claiming in an interview that a well-known temple in Uttarakhand is named after her, according to India Today. The statement, made during a conversation with anchor Siddharth Kannan, has sparked strong reactions from priests and residents near Badrinath Dham.
Urvashi Rautela’s ‘Temple’ Remark Sparks Outrage In Uttarakhand
During a conversation with host Siddharth Kannan, the ‘Daaku Maharaj’ actress said, “There is a temple in my name in Uttarakhand, next to Badrinath. If one visits the temple, it’s obvious that people will offer prayers.” She also added that students from Delhi University not only worship her photos but also refer to her as ‘Damdami Mai,’ and claimed there were media articles supporting this.

However, her remarks have not gone down well with religious authorities and locals. Bhuwan Chandra Uniyal, former religious official at Badrinath, slammed the comment, calling it ‘misleading.’ He clarified that the Urvashi Temple is dedicated to the mythological celestial god Urvashi and is listed among the 108 sacred Shaktipeeths, not associated with any celebrity.

Amit Sati, president of the Brahma Kapal Teerth Purohit Society, also disapproved of the actress’s statements, saying that the shrine holds deep mythological value and is connected to Hindu traditions, not to any individual. Locals from nearby Bamni and Pandukeshwar villages echoed these sentiments, saying such claims disrespect the spiritual sentiments of the region.
Urvashi Rautela’s Team Issues Clarification
In response to the backlash, Urvashi Rautela’s team issued an official statement claiming that her words were taken out of context. Shared via her Instagram story, the statement said that Urvashi never meant to say the temple was named after her full name but was referring to a temple with the name 'Urvashi.'
The statement also addressed her ‘Damdami Mai’ reference, stating it pertains to her association with Delhi University students and not with the temple. The team hinted at possible legal action against those misrepresenting her words, saying, “People misunderstood the phrase ‘Urvashi temple’ and assumed it was dedicated to the actress. In the closing remarks, Urvashi requested her critics to verify facts before spreading misinformation and emphasised the importance of mutual respect and dignity in public discourse.
