Bae Suzy is a popular singer and actor who has been one of the biggest stars in the Korean entertainment industry for over a decade. Her rise to fame began with her role in the highly acclaimed drama series, ‘Dream High’, which propelled her to stardom, and many more like ‘Anna’, ‘While You Were Sleeping’ and ‘Start-Up’. However, with fame comes criticism, and Suzy had also faced online hate from malicious commenters who hid behind the anonymity of the internet.

One such commenter was recently found guilty and fined by the Supreme Court in South Korea for spreading malicious comments about Suzy. The comments not only attacked her personal life but also her professional career, leading to considerable distress for Suzy and her fans.

About The Case

In 2015, a man wrote an online comment about the actor, describing and derogatorily referring to her as a ‘national hotel girl.’ At first, in the initial trial, the individual was declared innocent on appeal. But this time, following the decision, the man received a fine of 500,000 South Korean Won. This ruling is a significant victory for Suzy and other celebrities who face similar cases of online harassment and malicious comments “The expression ‘national hotel girl’ implies the opposite image of what Bae had established during her career, and it denounces her by sexually objectifying her”, reportedly said the Supreme Court.

Final Verdict By Supreme Court

According to news shared by Soompi, “On July 27, 2023, the Supreme Court Division 3 (Chief Justice Ahn Cheol Sang) dismissed the second appeal made by the malicious commenter (hereafter referred to as “A”), who was on trial on the charges of insult, and A was fined 500 thousand won (approx $391). The court concluded that the offensive remark, referring to Suzy as a ‘national hotel girl, violated Article 311 of the Korean Criminal Act.

According to news shared by Allkpop, " 'A' pleaded not guilty and was sentenced to a fine of 1 million won ($781.26 USD) in the first trial, which was overturned after the first trial. The trial continued until the court sentenced 'A' to a fine of 500,000 Won."
