Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui, known for his edgy and often provocative humour, is once again in the spotlight, but this time, it’s for a legal battle. His show ‘Hafta Vasooli’, streaming on JioHotstar, has come under fire after a formal complaint was filed against it. Advocate Amita Sachdeva, who complained, claims the show crosses the line by promoting obscenity, insulting multiple religions, and undermining cultural values. She also argues that the content could negatively influence younger audiences, raising concerns about its societal impact.

Complaint Against Munawar Faruqui

Advocate Amita Sachdeva took to X (formerly Twitter) to share details about her complaint against Faruqui. In her post, she called for an FIR (First Information Report) to be registered under Sections 196, 299, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the IT Act. According to Sachdeva, the show’s content is not only vulgar but also disrespectful to various religions, posing a threat to India’s cultural fabric. She emphasised her concerns about the show’s potential to harm young minds and erode societal values.

The complaint has sparked significant backlash, with various groups voicing their support for legal action. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, a religious organisation, has also demanded a ban on the show, claiming it could hurt the sentiments of people of different faiths. Faruqui, who has faced criticism in the past for his comedy, is no stranger to controversy. However, this latest incident has drawn widespread media attention, turning ‘Hafta Vasooli’ into a topic of heated debate.

Faruqui’s case is part of a growing trend in India where comedians and content creators are increasingly facing legal scrutiny for their work. This incident follows another recent controversy involving Ranveer Allahbadia (aka BeerBiceps) and Samay Raina on ‘India’s Got Talent’. During an episode, a contestant was asked an inappropriate question about their parents, leading to public outrage and multiple FIRs. The backlash was so severe that Raina removed all episodes of the show from YouTube. Even the Supreme Court weighed in on the matter, highlighting the fine line comedians often walk in India.
