Talking about motherhood with the TV actor Debina Bonnerjee, we tried to understand and redefine motherhood through the lens of our new campaign ‘Maa Beyond Stereotypes.’ Scroll down to read what Bonnerjee has to say about her motherhood journey, her experiences, and the importance of recognising mothers as individuals with dreams, aspirations, and identities beyond traditional roles.

Who Is Debina Bonnerjee?

Debina Bonnerjee is a popular TV actor who rose to fame after playing the role of Sita in the 2008 television soap opera Ramayan. She married her co-actor Gurmeet Choudhary and the couple is parents to two beautiful daughters, Lianna and Divisha.

The Evolving Feeling Of Being A ‘Mother’

Our interviewer Shruti Dixit asked the actor about her experiences and changes in her journey after becoming a mother. In response, Debina mentioned how she used to be a dog mom first and used to think that it was the peak of motherhood and the human capacity to love another being. She then explained that after she became a mother to her first daughter, Lianna Choudhary, she realised that love is a layered phenomenon and that every time you start loving someone, you feel like discovering a new layer of love, it always feels new.

She said that while you may think that you are at capacity of loving someone else, the second child, Divisha Choudhary (Debina Bonnerjee's Second Daughter) coming into her life made her realise that your heart can beat just the same for two or more people. She said, “Every time you feel like there can’t be anything bigger than this, you have so much more to offer and this feeling is ‘motherhood.’”

Who Is Debina Bonnerjee

Shruti asked Debina if she too is subjected to any stereotypical ideologies or if she herself had any before enduring the journey herself. To this, Debina replied that she wasn’t aware of the stereotypes existing in the society around motherhood but once she became a mother, she encountered such stereotypical thinking in people, especially related to her work. For example, people keep asking her how she is able to work despite being a mother. She further mentioned that since her mother was a housewife and she grew up with a notion (OTT Mothers Who Redefined Motherhood) around her that women are supposed to be home, she also wondered if she should stay at home and take care of her kids. However, she soon realised that she “didn’t feel good” when she was not working and decided to start working again. Even then, people commented on how she was able to recover so soon which troubled her a little but she chose to move past it and continue to follow her heart. After all, “if she is happy and confident, her kids will be fabulously happy and confident,” she added.
