Ameen Sayani, a popular radio show host, has passed away at the age of 91 due to a heart attack. His son Rajil Sayani confirmed the news today, Wednesday, February 21, 2024. The radio celebrity was taken to HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai after his health deteriorated. However, he could not be saved. His son also announced that the funeral will be held on Thursday.

Who Was Ameen Sayani?

Ameen Sayani was the golden voice of ‘Binaca Geetmala’, an All India Radio show. Born on December 21, 1932, in Mumbai, Sayani was highly renowned for many radio shows that he hosted throughout his career. His mother was part of a newsletter in her times called ‘Rehbar’, and his brother Hamid Sayani was a popular English broadcaster.

Ameen Sayani started his career in the radio in 1952 with Radio Ceylon. While in the initial years of his career, he began as an English broadcaster, he switched to Hindi post-independence. He gained fame after getting on board with ‘Binaca Geetmala’ as its host in December 1952. This was a radio show used in Radio Ceylon which featured chartbuster Bollywood music. The show was later broadcast on Vividh Bharati of All India Radio.

Ameen Sayani broke records after hosting or doing voiceovers for over 54,000 radio programs. He also got a Limca Book Of World Records for being a part of about 19,000 jingles. He also hosted other shows including ‘Bournvita Quiz Contest’, ‘S Kumars Ka Filmi Muqaddama’, ‘Filmi Mulaqaat’, ‘Saridon Ke Saathi’, and ‘Sangeet kay Sitaron ki Mehfil’. Further, he also acted in Bollywood movies like ‘Bhoot Bungla’, ‘Teen Devian’, ‘Boxer’, and ‘Qatl’.

All About Binaca Geetmala

‘Binaca Geetmala’ was Ameen Sayani’s most popular radio show which helped him climb the ladder of success where he featured popular Bollywood songs. Even though the episodes of the show were 30 minutes runtime, with growing popularity, the show went on season after season. It started in 1952 and stretched till 1994. Over the years, its names changed from ‘Geetmala’ to ‘Binaca Geetmala’, ‘’Hit Parade’ and ‘Cibaca Geetmala. The show was also brought back later between 2000-2001 and 2001-2003.
