Summer brings intense heat, tropical fruits, and the scorching rays of the sun. Sun tanning is one of the common issues that people face during this season.
The sun's UV rays cause damage to the outer layer of our skin. The face, neck, hands, and elbows are the most commonly tanned areas because they are the most exposed.
This is why sunscreen is essential, especially during the summer. However, it doesn’t always do the job. Over time, gentle exfoliation helps combat tanning. This article includes three homemade scrub recipes that will aid in gentle
exfoliation.
Disclaimer: Always perform a patch test on your arm before applying any of these scrubs directly to your face.
Flour & Turmeric Scrub
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon of gram flour
- 2 tablespoons of rice flour
- 2 tablespoons of tomato pulp
- ½ tablespoon of lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric
Application:
- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl to form a scrub-like consistency.
- Apply it to areas that are frequently exposed to the sun.
- Leave the scrub on for 15-20 minutes.
- Do not directly wash it off; exfoliate it as you wash it with water.
Benefits:
- Gram flour or besan acts as a great cleanser and has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
- If you do not have rice flour, you can crush rice to make it. The granules of rice act as an exfoliator.
- Tomato removes dead skin cells and gives your skin a brightening effect. It also protects from sun damage and reduces oiliness.
- Lemon juice has vitamin C, which helps reduce tan.
- Turmeric has healing properties. Curcumin is a bioactive component that acts as an anti-inflammatory and brings a glow and lustre to the skin.
Honey & Sugar Scrub
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
Application:
- Mix all the ingredients to form a paste.
- Use the scrub to exfoliate the parts of your body that are most exposed to the sun.
- Once it has been on for 5 to 10 minutes, wash it off.
Benefits:
- The nitric acid in the lemon lightens tan marks.
- Honey gives the skin a cooling effect and acts as a moisturising ingredient.
- The granules of sugar help exfoliate the skin.
Coffee Scrub
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of coffee
- 1 teaspoon of olive, coconut, or almond oil
Application:
- Mix all the ingredients to form a scrub-like paste.
- Exfoliate with the scrub in a circular motion all over your problem areas.
- Leave it on for 1-2 minutes and wash it off after.
Benefits:
- Coffee is a rich source of antioxidants that protect us against free radicals.
- Caffeine improves blood flow in the skin and stimulates it.
- Coffee reverses the damage caused by UV rays and helps restore skin from suntan.
You can use any of these scrubs once a week for radiant and glowing skin. Always remember to apply a nourishing moisturiser or aloe vera gel after using any one of these scrubs.
