Winter weather often causes lips to become dry and pigmented due to dehydration, UV exposure, and the buildup of dead skin. To restore your natural lip colour, here are five effective, natural home remedies.
Beetroot is full of antioxidants and natural pigments called betalains. This not only works as a remedy to remove spots, but it will also give the complexion a pink blush instantly.
How to Use: Grate some beetroot and squeeze out the juice. Apply this juice to your lips every night and leave it on. Rinse your lips with this in the morning.
Why It Works: It becomes the stain as the antioxidants repair the skin of the lips.
Dead skin accumulation is the main reason for the lifeless, darker look of your lips in winter. Exfoliating your lips is one way of uncovering the new, pink layer of skin.
Procedure: Mix one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of granulated sugar. Massage your lips gently in circular motion for two minutes by applying this paste. Rinse your lips in lukewarm water.
Why it works: Sugar exfoliates the dead cells, while the honey is a humectant, which helps retain moisture.
Lemon also contains citric acid, which is a mild bleaching compound and can thus eliminate hyperpigmentation.
Use: Take an equal amount of fresh lemon juice and organic honey. Apply a thin layer to your lips and keep it for 15-20 minutes before rinsing.
Tip: Do not do this step if your lips are chapped or bleeding because the acid will burn. Finish this step by applying lip balm.

Turmeric is known to be a good melanin inhibitor, meaning that it will reduce the rate at which the skin darkens.
Method: Combine a pinch of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of cold milk to make a thick paste. Apply the paste to your lips and leave it for five minutes. Rinse the paste off using a damp cloth.
Why it works: The lactic acid found in milk acts as an exfoliant for the skin. Turmeric brightens the skin.
Winter air strips your lips of their natural oils. Sweet Almond oil contains Vitamin E, which plays an essential role in skin repair and lightening.
Usage: Take a drop of pure almond oil or desi ghee and massage your lips for 2 minutes before sleeping. Leave overnight.
Why it works: It increases blood flow and moisturises deeply to prevent the ashy feeling often associated with winter dryness.
