With its dry winds and colder temperatures, winter brings unique challenges for the skin. In Ayurveda, this season is associated with an increase in Vata dosha, resulting in skin concerns like flakiness, dehydration, and dullness. External factors such as indoor heating, hot water baths, and reduced humidity levels in the air further deplete the skin’s natural oils, intensifying these issues. Ayurveda, the science of life, approaches skincare holistically, considering the body’s internal and external needs. Balancing Vata dosha through nourishing routines, hydrating foods, Rasayanas, and mindful practices, you can maintain healthy and glowing skin even during the harshest months. Dr Rini Vohra Shrivastava PhD., Scientific Advisor, Maharishi Ayurveda, South Delhi shared some ayurvedic tips to get glowing skin in winter.

7 Ayurvedic Hacks For Glowing Skin In Winters

Here are some of the Ayurvedic hacks for glowing skin in winter:

Begin With Panchakarma For Comprehensive Skincare

Dr Rini recommends Panchakarma, an ayurvedic practice for skin rejuvenation. It is a deeply cleansing and rejuvenating process that eliminates toxins and revitalises the skin by clearing the microchannels.

Hydrate And Nourish From Within

According to Rini, Skin hydration starts with internal nourishment. Ayurveda recommends beginning the day with warm water to flush out toxins and activate Agni (digestive fire). Following this with warm, cooked foods such as porridges or soups helps balance Vata and provides the necessary internal warmth during winter. She also recommends 'Madhura Rasa' (sweet-tasting) foods like ghee and nuts for their healthy fats, which keep the skin hydrated from within. Seasonal fruits such as pomegranates offer antioxidants that protect the skin from dryness caused by cold winds.

Balance Vata With Abhyanga (Oil Massage)

Rini suggests daily self-massage with warm oils, or Abhyanga is one of the most effective ways to balance Vata dosha and maintain skin health. The Charaka Samhita extols Abhyanga for improving circulation, nourishing the skin, and removing impurities through the srotas. During winter, sesame oil is ideal for its warming and hydrating properties. Massage warm oil onto the skin in gentle, circular motions for 10–15 minutes before bathing. This locks in moisture enhances elasticity, and imparts a natural glow. Avoid hot water baths, as they strip the skin of natural oils, especially for the face and head.

Enhance Skin Health With Nasya

According to Rini, Nasya, the practice of applying medicinal oils through the nasal passages, plays a vital role in maintaining hydration and balancing Vata dosha. Administering 2–3 drops of Anu Tailam or cow ghee into each nostril hydrates facial tissues, prevents dryness and supports skin elasticity.

Use Natural Cleansers And Moisturisers

Rini highlights that Ayurveda advocates using natural ingredients to preserve the skin’s balance. For cleansing, gentle options such as raw milk, rose water, or a chandan (sandalwood) and rose water paste effectively removes impurities while maintaining moisture. She recommends occasional exfoliation using besan (gram flour), haldi (turmeric), and yoghurt scrub for smooth and radiant skin.

Rejuvenate With Rasayanas

According to Rini, Ayurveda emphasises the importance of incorporating Rasayanas into your daily routine to support skin health from within. These rejuvenating formulations nourish the Rasa Dhatu (the first tissue) and enhance skin health and vitality. She recommends options such as Amla, rich in Vitamin C, Manjistha, known for detoxifying the blood, and Shatavari, which helps maintain hydration, working synergistically to improve skin texture and glow.

Stay Active And Manage Stress

Rini highlights that healthy skin reflects overall well-being, which Ayurveda links to physical activity and stress management. Practises such as yoga, brisk walking, and pranayama (breathing exercises) improve circulation and enhance oxygen flow to the skin, boosting its natural glow. Additionally, restful sleep (6–8 hours) is equally essential, as it allows the skin to repair itself and rejuvenate. Transcendental Meditation helps calm the mind and reduce stress-induced dullness.
