An itchy vagina is pretty irritating and can cause you embarrassment in public. But once you know the cause, it becomes easy to manage. Some possible causes are yeast infection, skin irritants, or even stress. Even though vaginal itching is common and the reasons for it are simple per se, it can indicate something serious like STIs or sexually transmitted infections and, at times, even vulvar cancer.
Can STIs Cause Vaginal Itching?
According to Dr. Sheetal Jindal, Senior Consultant and IVF-PGT Expert at Jindal IVF, "Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can cause vaginal itching, a common symptom of various infections. Vaginal itching is often a result of inflammation or irritation caused by the infection."
She adds, "STIs like trichomoniasis, genital herpes, genital warts, chlamydia, and gonorrhea can lead to vaginal itching, along with other symptoms such as abnormal discharge, pain during urination, and discomfort during intercourse. In cases of vaginal candidiasis, though not an STI in the traditional sense, yeast overgrowth can also result in intense itching and irritation."
However, Dr. Jindal cautioned that "itching could also be a sign of an allergic reaction to certain medications, irritants, or hygiene products." So get "pelvic examination, swab tests, and urine tests" done so doctors can help conclude the underlying cause.

"Early detection and treatment, including antibiotics or antiviral medications, are crucial to prevent complications like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or chronic infection," she added.
Have STI? Here's How You Can Control Itching
If you have, unfortunately, contracted the STI, getting timely and immediate treatment is necessary. Dr. Jindal states the same and says, "When dealing with vaginal itching caused by an STI, addressing the underlying infection is crucial. It is essential to seek medical attention to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment."
In the meantime, you should have a good hygiene routine. Dr. Jindal suggests:
- Keeping the area clean and dry
- Wearing loose-fitting, breathable clothing and cotton underwear
- Avoiding scented soaps, douches, and other potential irritants
- Refraining from sexual activity during the treatment period to help reduce further irritation and risk of transmitting the infection
"Monitoring symptoms and attending follow-up appointments ensure that any complications are detected early and managed appropriately," she adds.
How To Prevent STIs, Thus Vaginal Itching
Dr. Jindal mentions a few key steps you can take to prevent getting afflicted with STIs and, thus, vaginal itching. They are:
- Practising safe sex by consistently using condoms
- For individuals engaging in oral sex, using dental dams
- Going for regular STI screenings for sexually active individuals
- Having open communication with sexual partners about STI status and sexual health
- Getting vaccination against certain STIs, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B
- Limiting the number of sexual partners
- Maintaining overall health through a balanced diet, regular exercise
- Avoiding substances that compromise the immune system
"Importantly, educating oneself about STI transmission and symptoms ensures informed decision-making and proactive health management," Dr. Jindal wraps up.
