As the monsoon season ensues in Delhi, the city is grappling not only with conjunctivitis infections but also witnessing a concerning surge in dengue cases. A recent development has shed light on the severity of the situation, as the Delhi government reported that 19 out of 20 dengue samples sent for genome sequencing have tested positive for the dangerous DENV-2 strain. Known for causing significant harm, this strain has raised alarm among health authorities and the public.

Dengue Type-2 Strain Spreads In Delhi

Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj revealed that out of the 20 dengue-positive samples subjected to genome sequencing in the city, an alarming 19 showed the presence of the severe strain type-2. The situation is becoming increasingly concerning, with the number of reported dengue cases in the first three weeks of July reaching nearly 65, as compared to 40 cases in June and 23 cases in May, according to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's report.

Adding to the worries, the recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding in various areas of the national capital, along with the rising water level of the Yamuna river, have heightened the fear of a potential dengue outbreak.

Government Takes Action To Curb The Spread

To assess the effectiveness of efforts in curbing the spread of vector-borne diseases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently held a high-level review meeting. This meeting included the participation of the Mayor of Delhi, Shelly Oberoi, the Health Minister, and other prominent municipal and health authorities.

As part of the government's proactive approach, they announced the establishment of a 24-hour dengue control room to provide necessary support and assistance. In response to concerns raised in a report by TOI, doctors have been advised against prescribing blood thinners like aspirin and disprin during dengue treatment, as they could pose harm to patients.

Moreover, the government has issued directives to various departments and organisations, emphasising the need to take preventive measures against mosquito breeding in and around their workplaces. This multifaceted approach seeks to combat the growing threat of vector-borne illnesses and safeguard public health in the region.

What Is Dengue Type-2 Strain?

Dengue Virus Type-2 (DENV-2) is known for its severity and propensity to cause haemorrhagic fever and mortality. Reports indicate that DENV-2 is more easily transmitted than the other three serotypes of the dengue virus, and it has a higher likelihood of causing severe conditions like Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS).

dengue symptoms

The dengue virus (DENV) is responsible for causing dengue, and it is transmitted through mosquitoes. Female mosquitoes, (mosquito attacks) primarily of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus, are the main carriers of the virus. These same mosquitoes are also responsible for spreading other diseases like Zika virus, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Controlling the mosquito population and preventing their breeding is essential in curbing the transmission of these dangerous viruses and protecting public health.

Dengue fever is characterised by high temperatures reaching up to 104°F (40°C) and presents with various other signs and symptoms. These include headaches, along with muscle, bone, or joint pain. Patients may experience nausea, vomiting, and pain behind the eyes, and swollen glands might also be observed. Identifying these symptoms is crucial for early detection and appropriate medical intervention to manage the condition effectively.
