Recently, there has been a notable transformation in both the sci-fi genre and the anime industry, which have long been associated with catering primarily to male audiences. These stereotypes are gradually giving way to a more inclusive and diverse approach. Notably, both sci-fi and anime are broadening their appeal to encompass a wider range of viewers. As part of this shift, there are now numerous anime series that feature female protagonists in prominent roles. These shows not only challenge traditional gender roles but also offer compelling and engaging narratives. Here, we've compiled a list of some must-watch sci-fi anime series with female lead characters that deserve recognition and praise.
1. ‘Kill La Kill’
'Kill la Kill' wholeheartedly embraces its outrageous concept within a dystopian setting. In this anime, (anime for newcomers) the protagonist Ryuko challenges the oppressive student council of an authoritarian school, aided by a unique set of weapons: one-half of enormous scissors and a sentient sailor uniform.
The art and animation are cartoonishly exaggerated to emphasise the action and the humour. The plot doesn't really hold up to scrutiny but does at least serve as a delivery system for the action and humour. ‘Kill la Kill’ is instantly unforgettable and immensely entertaining.
2. ‘Ghost In The Shell’
Masamune Shirow's renowned cyberpunk manga has served as the inspiration for multiple anime versions, a recent Netflix movie and series, video games, and a 2017 live-action film, mired in controversy due to Scarlett Johansson's casting. Despite differing plot nuances, Major Motoko Kusanagi consistently serves as the central character, a cyborg police officer in Japan's Public Security Section 9. Across adaptations, the core theme remains the exploration of the interplay between humanity and technology, fuelling the series' stylish cyberpunk action.
3. ‘Paprika’
The English release poster for ‘Paprika’ used the tagline ‘This is your brain on anime,’ a nod to a classic anti-drug campaign. The film undeniably has a mind-bending quality, featuring a plot reminiscent of ‘Inception.’ It centres around Paprika, a therapist's virtual avatar, created by a machine that can enter dreams and impact people on a subconscious level. The movie's surreal art style and animated sequences add to its overall bewilderment.

4. ‘Burst Angel’
Set in a lawless and post-apocalyptic near-future world, Burst Angel revolves around a band of female mercenaries. While many anime series would use such a backdrop to explore profound themes, Burst Angel wholeheartedly embraces over-the-top action. This doesn't diminish its appeal; in fact, the intense gunfights are the show's main attraction, occasionally escalating into full-scale battles involving mechs equipped with roller skates and jetpacks. It may sound absurd, and it is, but it's undeniably enjoyable. An interesting tidbit is that three out of the four primary female characters are named after the sisters in ‘Little Women.’
