Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, the Netflix documentary The Elephant Whisperers has won the Oscars 2023 under the Best Documentary category. The film made history with its first Indian win at the 95th edition of the Academy Awards.
Taking it to social media, Monga wrote, “Tonight is historic as this is the first-ever Oscar for an Indian production. India’s Glory with 2 women. In another appreciation post for Gonsalves, Monga wrote about women telling stories and first Indian women to be nominated at the Oscars. “Here’s to your purest vision, here’s to women telling stories to the world. No matter the result today, look how far we’ve come and are already winners. This is the first time a film on an indigenous community from India is nominated. This is the first time two women are nominated from India. Regardless of the outcome, The Elephant Whisperers will continue to touch the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe and will outlive us and continue to be loved. About The Film
The Elephant Whisperers is a touching Tamil documentary short film that brought to life the unbreakable bond between humans and animals through the story of two abandoned elephants and their caretakers. This 41-minute film co-produced by Achin Jain, narrates the story of a family from Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai Tiger Reserve who adopts two orphaned baby elephants.
