OMG 2: 5 Questions Pankaj Tripathi Asked About Sex Ed In The Film That We Need To Note

After being a blockbuster hit in theatres, OMG 2 has been released on Netflix. It offered a fresh take on sex education and emphasised its importance in the lives of kids at an impressionable stage.

In the name of sex education, we were taught with references to our eyes, nose, lips, hands, waist, hips, thighs, legs, feet, etc., but our genitals were referred to as private parts. Similarly, we have several names for periods too, like aunty, chums, being down, and whatnot. We made genitals and sex education a taboo.

‘OMG 2’ on Netflix is an eye-opener. It was released in theatres on August 11, 2023, but I recently watched it and was astounded by the performance of Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam. The movie gained the support of the audience for touching a crucial subject of sex education and handling it with care.

Plotline Of ‘OMG 2’

The movie revolves around Kanti Sharma Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi), an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He receives a call one day that his son Vivek was admitted to the hospital. The doctor said that he took three pills of Viagra. Initially ashamed and worried about his kid, he asked his friend about the incident who told him a few kids bullied Vivek in school.

They cornered him in the washroom and said that the size of his penis is proportional to the length of the index finger from the base of the thumb when they form an ‘L’. Soon, a video of Vivek masturbating in the school washroom went viral. He was terminated immediately, so he attempted suicide.

Kumar, as an incarnation of Lord Shiva, descends on Earth to help Kanti fight a battle to make Vivek realise that he did not commit any crime. His parents and the school were responsible for making sex education a taboo. Kamini Maheshwari, played by Gautam, comes in defence of the school run by her father-in-law.

Here are five questions that Kanti asked in the courtroom that we must note.

1. Why Dance Can Become A Part Of Extracurricular And Sex Education Is Considered Obscene?

In a heated argument to get his case against the school and other people who were running illegal businesses related to sexual health, Kanti asked the court why dance lessons (salsa) were not a part of the syllabus but were still taught to his kid, and not sex education?

Why can’t both be a part of extracurricular sessions where kids get to learn an art form and about their bodies, intimacy, and get answers to their queries?

2. Ancient Indians Wrote And Taught Kamasutra, Why The Modern Education System Refuses To Adopt It?

In another argument, Kanti told the court that ancient Indians not only wrote Kamasutra (a book with in-depth details about eroticism, orgasms, sexuality, and emotional connection) but also taught it to kids along with other crucial subjects so that they have the knowledge of their bodies.

He asked why we don’t teach our kids about their body instead of shaming them for exploring their sexuality (Sexual Preference And Gender Identity)?

3. Why Are Khajuraho Temples Important To History, But Sex Education Is Vulgar?

There are several temples, including Khajuraho Temples, Sun Temple, Virupaksha Temple, etc., with erotic sculptures carved on their walls. We consider them important to our history because of the sheer knowledge of people to make such intricate art pieces. However, we fail to acknowledge that these erotic sculptures are trying to teach us something.

4. Do You Want To See Your Kid Educated And Respecting Women Around Them?

One of the best scenes in the movie is when Kamini tries to establish that the school was inclusive because they admitted a sex worker’s kid. Kanti asked her if the men who came to her ever satisfied her needs.

She said some customers approach sex workers to satiate their hunger, some do unspeakable things, and those who can’t perform cry in front of them. Kanti asked her “Would you want to see your child among those uneducated idiots or an educated person who respects women and knows how to treat the body of their partner?”

5. Why Do We Feel Shy To Talk About Private Parts?

Kamini said that it was impossible to talk to kids about sex (Are Sex And Intimacy Same?). People in rural areas, tier II and III cities will not accept it. Kanti said that we must approach the subject without attaching stigma to it, like we are teaching them about eyes, nose, hands, hair, legs, and other parts of the body.

We need to do away with the taboo and teach our kids about their bodies so that they do not harm themselves and believe in myths.
