Ekta Kapoor is a household name, and there is no doubt about it. “Rishton ke bhi roop badalte hain….” No matter where you are, if you hear the first song, you can immediately recall the entire video. Our Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani, aka Tulsi, gave a tour of her house while introducing the Virani clan. It was our entire childhood, at least for the 90s kids.
Keeping the exaggerated and on-and-off killing of characters aside, Kapoor’s TV serials have undeniably been our guilty pleasures. They have given the audience several household characters like Tulsi, Parvati, Priya, Pragya, Prachi and Prerna among others.
‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi’ and ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii’ are two of the longest-running serials on Indian television, and every Hindi drama love would know their story by heart. Whether it is summer or winter, the prime-time shows remind us of the simpler times when the roads would get empty, everyone in the house would just shut up, and families would wait for the next twist to reveal in their two shows.
Kapoor serials have always had the ideal portrayal of women. They would be sacrificial Goddesses but would take the form of Durga if anything wrong were to happen to their husbands, family, and kids. And let’s be real, we all have been fascinated by these shows and plots.
As she is celebrating her birthday on June 7, we are listing six dramas directed or produced by Ekta Kapoor that all of us are guilty of watching.
‘Kasautii Zindagi Kay’

It was the second part of ‘Kasautii Zindagi Kay’ starring Shweta Tiwari, Ronit Roy, and Cezanne Khan as leads. ‘In Kasautii Zindagi Kay 2’, Parth Samthaan, Karan Singh Grover, and Erica Fernandes reprised the roles of Anurag Basu, Rishabh Bajaj, and Prerna Sharma.
But guess what? The story of the serial was a mirror reflection of each other. The crux was that Prerna and Anurag loved each other but could not be together. However, they always loved each other. Around the mid of the series Rishabh Bajaj enters and makes Prerna fall in love with him. We all had our eyes on the television whenever a twist was expected.
‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’

‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’ started as a story of a middle-aged couple finding love again in their life. The sweet and sour chemistry of Divyanka Tripathi, aka Dr Ishita Raman, and Karan Patel, aka Raman Kumar, has the audience hooked on the show.
A few months later, the daily soap started introducing drama and exciting twists and turns to the story. But we have to agree, despite all its ups and downs, the show bid an emotional farewell to its loyal fan base.
‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain 2’

‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’, ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain 2’, and now, ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain 3’. Ekta Kapoor has truly got the audience hooked on the characters of Ram and Priya, who love each other immensely but fight like kids. Their tangy chemistry has been loved by fans so much that before they could wrap up season two, they had announced season three in which Nakuul Mehta and Disha Parmar have reprised their roles of Ram Kapoor and Priya Sood.
Despite the same characters and slightly different stories, we are again hooked to our screens to watch the lovely couple. Try watching the show with a tub of ice cream, and it will uplift your mood. It might be not because of the story, but because of the high-end drama unfolding in almost every episode.
‘Tere Liye’

‘Tere Liye’ was among a few short-lived shows of Ekta Kapoor that managed to impress the audience and ended on a happy note. Starring Anupriya Kapoor as Taani and Harshad Chopra as Anurag, it was a love story of high-school sweethearts who had to overcome the class divide and other dramatised twists that involved goons, vamps in the family, and family friends turning into family-enemies.
‘Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani’

‘Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani’ was our Indian version of ‘The Vampire Diaries’. Starring Vivian Dsena as Abhay the Vampire and Sukriti Kandpal as Piya. It was a love story that most 90s kids were fascinated with and could hardly bear to skip an episode.

Despite watching a mongoose, an eagle, a peahen, and other animals shape-shifting into humans, the show continues to grace the Indian television screens with one season after another. But we agree that its bearable VFX and dramatic stories have made it top the list of our guilty pleasures and even TRPs.
