As per the latest reports, China is witnessing a new wave of Covid-19 cases that can be estimated to be as big as 65 million cases per week by the end of June. This is certainly alarming as this estimate is given by respiratory disease specialist, Zhong Nanshan during a biotech conference in Guangzhou. Zhong’s estimate provides a rather rare glimpse into the impact of the latest omicron variant, XBB, which has been resurging in cases across China since late April 2023.
Numerous countries have so far discovered this new sub-variant of Covid-19 named XBB 1.16, which has infected thousands of people in India. The formerly mild instances of COVID in India have dramatically increased as a result of this virus strain.
According to the global health agency, XBB.1.16 is the sixth form that has been found in different countries now. Even though the variant's cases and fatalities are still on the decline, several nations, notably India, are reporting recent surges in cases, according to WHO. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry of India, India registered a sudden rise of 7,830 coronavirus cases on April 12, 2023.
World Health Organization’s (WHO) technical lead for COVID-19 Maria Van Kerkhove said, “The new variant XBB.1.16 is the one to watch. It noted that the variant needs close monitoring, we are very concerned about the potential of the virus to change to become more severe.”
