If you are a frequent train traveller then here are some new guidelines by IRCTC you need to be cognizant of. These new guidelines have been introduced to ensure the comfort of passengers onboard after 10 pm.

If you are a frequent train traveller and have common concerns like co-passengers talking loudly, keeping their lights on throughout the night, and listening to music on speakers then we have some good news for you. You will no longer be subjected to these problems if you travel by train at night often. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced new guidelines for passengers travelling by train at night.

These new guidelines have been introduced to ensure the comfort of all the passengers. Travellers onboard the train at night after 10 pm will have to keep in mind the following guidelines.

Guidelines For Passengers Onboard After 10 PM

  • No passenger travelling is allowed to speak loudly on their mobile phone while on their seat, compartment or coach.
  • No passenger can listen to their music at a high decibel without their earphones while on the train.
  • Passengers aren't allowed to keep their lights on after 10 pm. However, they can use the night light.
  • Smoking, drinking or doing any other activity that is against public acceptance in the train will be unacceptable.

  • Carrying inflammable objects in the train isn't allowed and is against the rules of Indian railways.
  • Passengers travelling in groups on the train will not be allowed to interact after 10 pm.
  • Food in train online services will not be allowed to serve food after 10 pm. However, passengers can pre-order their meals or breakfast while on train via e-catering services.
  • Lower berth passengers will not be allowed to complain if a middle berth passenger wants to open their seat. Middle berth passengers can sleep in their berths from 10 pm till 6 am.

Rules For Train Staff

  • Travelling ticket examiner (TTE) will not be allowed to come and check the tickets of passengers after 10 pm.
  • Train staff should be present on the train during the night to assist if a passenger complains about another passenger.
  • If passengers miss their trains, the TTE can allocate their seats to other passengers only an hour later or after crossing the next two stations.

IRCTC, along with the set of new rules has announced that if any passenger is found violating any of the guidelines at night, they will be subjected to strict actions.

Stay Alert

A lot of times we get too lost in our phones, ignoring all that is happening around us. Limit Your Conversation

You might want to have a quick chat with your co-passenger to kill time on the train. However, make sure that you don't disclose your personal information. You never know the intentions of others and it is better to limit your conversation rather than regretting later.

Approach TTE If You Feel Unsafe

If you are a woman who frequently travels alone, make sure you get in touch with the train ticket examiner if you feel unsafe or suffer from a sexual harassment incident while travelling on the train.
