The United Nations along with 45 other countries signed the Montreal Protocol on September 16, 1987, as a step to spread awareness and take action to protect the ozone layer. Thus, every year, this day is celebrated as International Day for the preservation of the ozone layer, which is the main purpose of the Montreal Protocol. Furthermore, on September 16, 2009, the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol became the first treaties in the history of the United Nations to achieve universal amendment. The production of CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbon) from refrigerators, air conditioners and other cooling products results in rapid depletion of the ozone layer.
