World Breastfeeding Week is observed in over 120 countries every year from August 1 to 7. The week is celebrated to highlight the importance of nursing for a baby to ensure enhanced nutrition, guarantee food security and lessen inequalities both internationally and domestically. This global campaign promotes supportive policies that empower mothers, educate families and increase awareness. From its promotion to providing necessary tools to the mothers, this event aims to provide every child with the greatest possible start in life.
Started in 1990, World Breastfeeding Week was built with the goal of eliminating all forms of child malnutrition including wasting and obesity by promoting breastfeeding. According to it, every child must be nursed till he or she is 2 years old. Also, breastfeeding serves as a baby’s first vaccination, shielding them from a variety of common childhood ailments. This event is celebrated for 34 years globally from August 1 to 7.
