Indian cinema is obsessed with the male-centric strand of thought that resonates and runs parallel to the patriarchal thought of the society. People grooving to the beats of cheesy lyrics objectifying women’s body and shape don’t have any problem until and unless a strong woman comes in front of them to subvert their conventional dominance, but Bollywood is no more an all-male bastion. Now leading ladies of Bollywood are smashing and subverting the male patriarchy that is highly engraved in the entertainment fabric of this industry.

Why The Divide?

Be it a movie like Lipstick under my burkha or the much talked about Veere di Wedding, both movies have one commonality that both are driven by female protagonists and both have fallen prey to the thoughts guiding conventional manhood. Lipstick under my burkha, directed by Alankrita Srivastava, won many accolades all across the world but when it came for its grand release in its homeland, the movie faced fierce criticism and was flayed by different quarters of society for being ‘vulgar and pseudo-feminist’ as the movie was revolved around the sexual fantasies of four women living in small town of Bhopal. The hypocritical behavior of the society that did not frown even once when movies like Masti and Great Grand Masti, that displayed the sexual fantasies of men, got their way cleared by the censor board and society without being subjected to the tough questions that these female-centric movies were subjected to. Why are women not allowed to express and talk about their sexual desires and fantasies openly?

The much-talked-about Veere Di Wedding, that made a grand entry to cinema halls, also drew huge criticism from the flag-bearers of morality within the society.

The movie revolved around four female protagonists and their bonhomie. The ladies talking blatantly about their sex life and that did not go down well within the society. This triggered up a lot of controversies. However, it also traced the trajectory of Indian cinema that female-centric movies stir up controversies. This should make us question the fact that why should these movies are tagged as 'female-centric movies'. Have you ever heard of a category like 'male-centric movies'? The divide starts right there.
