The Basant Panchami festival, observed on January 23, 2026, welcomes the advent of Spring and the birthday of Goddess Saraswati, who symbolises knowledge and educational sciences. This festival is characterised by the bright colour of yellow in clothes, food items, and flowers used during worship rituals. Here is why yellow flowers take such prominence in this festival.
The tradition of yellow flowers can be traced to a transition of seasons and Vedic traditions. With the passage of winter, landscape transformation takes place because of mustard flowers spreading all over India, thus forming a yellow carpet of nature’s regeneration. This tradition of flower offerings to Lord Hanuman can also be understood because it helps followers to synchronise their religiosity with nature’s awakening.

In the context of Basant Panchami, the colour yellow (or Basanti) carries several profound meanings:
Purity and Peace: This colour signifies 'Sattva Guna', the element of purity, goodness and tranquillity. This colour is said to have a calming effect on the mind and make it ready to acquire knowledge.
The Light of Intellect: Like the sun, yellow is also an index of the light that dispels the darkness of ignorance. It symbolises the enlightenment of the soul by Vidya (Knowledge).
Auspiciousness: The colour yellow is highly auspicious in Indian culture. It is associated with Vishnu and Jupiter (Guru), the planet ruling wisdom and luck.

The act of offering yellow flowers like Marigolds (Genda), Yellow Roses, or Allamanda during the Saraswati Puja holds specific spiritual significance:
Solar Plexus Activation: The Manipura chakra is associated with the colour yellow in its spiritual form and represents energy, strength of will, and accomplishment. The offering of colours is related to improving concentration and ambition in a person.
Honouring the Harvest: It is the Basant Ritu (Season of Spring). The flowers are yellow in colour, representing the ripening of the harvests and the approaching season of agricultural abundance.
Seeking the Wisdom of the Deities: In the practice of leaving yellow flowers at the feet of Goddess Sri Saraswati, seekers offer their ego to the deity to attain the 'honey' or wisdom.
