On April 1, 2025, National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) Director General Poonam Gupta was appointed as the Deputy Governor of The Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The decision came days ahead of the upcoming meeting of the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which will be held on April 7-9, 2025. Reportedly, the position of the RBI Deputy has been vacant since January after Michail Patra stepped down from his responsibilities. He oversaw key departments including monetary policy, financial markets operations, regulation and economic research between January 2020-2025. Gupta will now hold the position for a period of three years.
Who Is Poonam Gupta?
Gupta is the Director General of the NCAER, a leading economic policy think tank. Recently appointed by the RBI, she will oversee the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and will lead the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

Poonam Gupta has had a lucrative career. Before joining NCAER in 2021, she spent almost two decades working at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in the United States. Earlier, she taught economics at the Delhi School of Economics and the University of Maryland in the (US). She also held visiting faculty positions at the Indian Statistical Institute in Delhi. Additionally, Gupta has held prestigious roles as RBI Chair Professor at NIPFP and professor at ICRIER.
Not only does she hold various esteemed positions, but she's also a part of the Development Advisory Committee of NITI Aayog and serves on the Executive Committee of FICCI. She also chaired the Task Force on Macroeconomics and Trade during India's G20 Presidency.

Poonam Gupta’s Education
Poonam did her PhD and a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA. She acquired another Master's degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. She bagged the EXIM Bank Award for her doctoral research in International Economics in 1998.
Poonam Gupta’s Salary
Reportedly, the RBI is offering a salary of Rs 2.25 lakh for the position. Currently, RBI has four deputy governors, including Swaminathan J, T Rabi Sankar, and M Rajeshwar Rao, who have appointed Poonam Gupta.
