Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has announced significant changes to its Android device compatibility requirements. The update, scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2025, will impact users operating devices with Android 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier operating systems.
According to the updated WhatsApp support page, devices running Android 4.0 or older will lose compatibility with the app. The decision to drop support for older Android versions is tied to the limitations of devices running Android 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier. These older systems are no longer able to support the latest WhatsApp features, security updates, and improvements that the company continually rolls out. As a result, WhatsApp has decided to phase out support for these outdated operating systems.
The following smartphones will lose access to WhatsApp starting January 1, 2025:
These devices run on Android versions older than Android 4.4 (KitKat) and will no longer receive WhatsApp updates. If you own one of these phones, it’s advisable to upgrade to a more recent model to continue using the app without disruption.

In addition to Android devices, iPhone users will need to take action as well. By May 5, 2025, iPhones running iOS versions earlier than iOS 15.1 will also lose compatibility with WhatsApp. This includes models such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.
