In a momentous occasion on Ram Navami, the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya witnessed a remarkable scientific feat, as reported by NDTV. At the stroke of noon, the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol was anointed with a precision-guided beam of sunlight, known as the 'Surya Tilak'. This auspicious event was the culmination of meticulous planning and the collaborative efforts of a team of esteemed Indian scientists.

The Ingenious Mechanism
Commissioned by the temple trust, a team of scientists from leading government institutions, including the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) in Roorkee and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP) in Bengaluru, designed a sophisticated apparatus to make the Surya Tilak ritual a reality, as reported by NDTV. This intricate mechanism officially termed the 'Surya Tilak mechanism', involved a complex interplay of mirrors, lenses, and a specialised gearbox to precisely align the sun's rays and direct them onto the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol.
Mastering The Celestial Alignment
According to NDTV, the team from CBRI, led by Dr Pradeep Kumar Ramacharla, Scientist and Director, developed an opto-mechanical system that consisted of four mirrors and four lenses. This system was strategically placed on the top floor of the temple, with the mirrors and lenses precisely calibrated to divert and focus the sun's rays onto the idol's forehead. The incorporation of a tilt mechanism allowed for the fine-tuning of the first mirror's angle, ensuring that the sun's rays were directed towards the north and ultimately reached the Garbha Griha (inner sanctum) of the temple.

Reconciling The Lunar And Solar Calendars
The successful execution of the Surya Tilak ritual on the fixed date of Ram Navami, which is based on the lunar calendar, was a remarkable feat in itself. According to NDTV, the team from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru, led by Dr Annapurni Subramaniam, the Director of IIA, applied their expertise in positional astronomy to reconcile the apparent disparity between the lunar and solar (Gregorian) calendars. This technical mastery ensured that the sun's rays could ceremoniously anoint the idol of Ram Lalla on every Ram Navmi, a testament to the collaborative efforts of the scientific community.
Blend Of Science And Spirituality
The development of the Surya Tilak mechanism, as reported by NDTV, is a remarkable example of how science and tradition can coexist in harmony. By harnessing the power of the sun and the precision of scientific principles, the team of Indian scientists has not only preserved an ancient ritual but has also elevated it to new heights of technological innovation.
