What Is Sargi?

What Is Sargi

Sargi is a pre-dawn meal that is usually prepared by the mother-in-law. The sargi thali usually includes fruits, dry fruits and nuts, mithai, etc.

Sargi Ritual

Sargi is a Karwa Chauth ritual performed before sunrise. In the morning, around 4 to 5 am, women take a bath and wear red clothes along with doing their 16 shringaar (16 bridal adornments). The mothers-in-law of the women observing the fast prepare a thali, which usually includes sweets, savouries, dry fruits, coconut, and mathri. The mothers-in-law also present the daughters-in-law with gifts like sarees and jewellery.

Women eat from the special sargi thali. After that, she worships goddess Gauri and takes a vow to perform a nirjala fast all day long (without food and water).

Karwa Chauth Fasting Tips

If you are observing a nirjala fast on Karwa Chauth, make sure to include healthy things in your sargi to keep you going all day long.

  • Eat less fried and oily food, as it will only make you feel lethargic and dizzy.
  • Drink more fluid to stay hydrated. However, avoid coffee as it may cause dehydration.
  • Include fresh juices, vegetables, milk, buttermilk, and green tea.
  • Let your body rest. As you are fasting, your body cannot function like other days, so make sure that you are not running errands like every other day.
  • When you break your fast, don't overeat.

After Sargi

After eating the sargi, women generally do not eat any other food or fluid and fast until moonrise. In the evening, usually three to four hours before the moon rises, women read the katha and worship God. It is followed by thali vartana (plate rotation).
