Ordering food online is one of the habits that our generation has developed with the arrival of food delivery apps like Zomato and Swiggy. But how safe is it to order food from any place? The recent viral video of a Zomato delivery guy in Madurai eating from a customer’s food packs and then resealing it to make it look untouched looked hilarious at first but raises serious questions about the safety of food delivery. Zomato did some damage control by declaring on social media that they take food tampering very seriously and the food ordering giant even promised to take a slew of measures to curb this.

Actress Namrata Shirodkar who posted the video, wrote how shocked she is by the lack of basic hygiene and that she will discourage her kids from ordering food online. View her post here:

It's really shocking how these reputed food delivery companies are functioning. People order food online expecting basic hygiene and this is how it is delivered?!!?! What about the work ethics of these delivery boys?? Looks like its time to think twice before opening that app & placing the order. I am definitely not gonna encourage my kids to order food online, I suggest even you guys don't! #thisisNOTCOOL

Zomato sacked the guy off their platform and in a statement issued on their blog, said that this was a very ‘unusual and rare case’. They also promised to introduce tamper-proof tapes, educate their delivery fleet and encourage the app users to highlight any problems that they face.

The interesting thing about the whole incident is that when the news first broke out, people began abusing the delivery boy and the company for their behaviour. Trolls went berserk as usual and memes began doing the rounds but after a while, people began sympathising with the delivery boy because, well, hunger cannot be controlled at all times!

Zomato’s food delivery business has seen an unprecedented growth in the last year and with immense expansion of this degree, such events do happen to even the best of brands. But setting strict parameters for food safety should be a must in a country like India. I mean, what is it with food hygiene in India? Remember the Ikea showroom incidents where worms and insects were found in the food barely a few weeks after the place opened? Thanks to the power of social media, such incidents are easily recorded and shared so that the brands can be notified but what about the ones that go unrecorded?
