The 28-year-old Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat created history by becoming the only Indian woman to win two medals at Worlds. She defeated Sweden’s Jonna Malmgren to win the bronze medal in the 53-kg category at the World Wrestling Championships 2022. This is India’s first medal at the ongoing 2022 Wrestling World Championships in Belgrade.
She bagged her first bronze medal in the 2019 edition of the World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
Shocking Defeat On Tuesday
Phogat won the bronze after a shocking loss at the Championships a day before, on Tuesday. She lost to Mongolia’s Khulan Batkhuyag, 2022 Championships Silver Medalist with a score of 0-7 in the first round.
Road To Bronze Medal
Phogat's road to winning the bronze medal was not an easy one as she had to win three repechage rounds on her way to claim the award. In the first match, she defeated Zhuldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan with a score of 4-0. After that, she won over Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan to proceed to the bronze medal match.
In the bronze medal round, she won with a score of 8-0 by defeating Sweden’s Jonna Malmgren and created history. Phogat also recently won her third Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham.
Minister for I&B and Youth Affairs & Sports, Anurag Thakur congratulated Phogat via Tweet. He tweeted, “History Scripted at Belgrade! Congratulations @Phogat_Vinesh on the spectacular bronze medal win in the 53kg category of the World Wrestling Championships 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia!”
